Yes. The top one.

A little lesson in the value of research in this thread.
An original photo should be assigned more weight than an illustration in any book.

Correct me if i'm wrong but, I do believe the lower illustration is a french salute by a french legion volunteer.

Many thanks, that illustration confused me a bit
An exception to the rule could be Volstad drawings, most seem based on original photos, and they look awesome. However, a photo is the best graphic evidence with no doubt

If its a late -war impression ,I wouldnt present arms .
After late 44 they werent taught it .
They reduced the training programme and dropped it .

Try the "Exercieren und Kommandieren" by Denckler.

Re: Best way to salute with your mauser?
When you are aproatching a commander and the rifle is shouldered on the sling, you don't give a salute, but stand stil in attention before the commander and use your heles to make a clicking sound.
When you are on guard duty and the rifle is shouldered, you should give the present arms in a fluent move. You should follow the person with your head like on the order "Die Augen Links (Rechts)"
Like when there is a big party going on and you are on the entrance of a castle on the stairs and see a guest comming up the stairs you should both present arms and both follow the guest, even when it is a civil woman and guest of the party, so that you both look at eachother.

Re: Best way to salute with your mauser?
rely the present arms Genral salute was only given to highest ranking offices and dignatries, heads of state etc.. not the normal officer within the kompanie. A stillgestand with the rifle would have been enough. the second pic is def. French volenteers although it does look like the british way of saluting with the rifle whilst on the march. however its the french general salute
