WW2 Propoganda Kompanie? Movie Camera

Post by SchutzeHagemann »

Hello,

I'm trying to figure out what kind of camera this soldier is using. It seems it's connected to a battery of some sort.

Thanks guys!! I'm wanting to start an impression of a German war correspondent. The Arriflex seems affordable, but are there any other types of film cameras used on the frontlines and its film used in Wochenschaus?

Also, I saw a picture of a Luftwaffe captain.. below.. using an old Kodak Cine-Eight Model 25 8mm. Wondering if you guys know about this too, or if it would be correct for field use as well.

I think if your going for a KB / Wochenschau then you really need a Arriflex, any other format would be more along the lines of private home movies of the time IMO

I've only ever seen two Arriflex cameras here in Australia, both in the same private collection, and that was at least 20yrs ago. Matter for yourself of course but you could try and source a Cineflex PH-330 they're basically a direct copy of the Arriflex 35 II

If you think an Arriflex set up is affordable then you have more money than me! A body without lenses will cost £2-5000. A full set up with body, 3 lenses, film cassettes etc will be £15,000 plus!

edited to add: The 3 issue cine cameras were the Arriflex 2, Askania (K I think) and the Siemens B 16mm

Like anything in re-enacting its worth sticking to the "mainstream" (whatever that is), but Bell & Howell Eyemos were also used as well

Botty,

I did not research the Arriflex correctly... after I posted that I saw how expensive it was. :(

And don't forget to factor in the cost of 35mm or 16mm film, processing and if you want it telecined for editing. For 8mm film, you're talking around £50 for a package (film, processing and telecine) for a reel that lasts 3 minutes - and in my limited experience, you'll need to shoot alot more than that to produce something you'd be happy with - I'd shudder to think what 16mm or 35mm would cost  .

thanks for photos, never seen some of them !

"Filmberichters" used 16mm and 35mm format. 16 mm cameras were mostly portable and used directly in the field, 35mm as static.
16 mm cameras were mostly local provenience - Siemens or Arriflex, foreign like Kodak and Bell and Howell (especially the famous 70 model used by the Allies).
35 mm cameras were mainly german products Arri and Askania.

PS: that LW soldier with Kodak Cine 8 camera - not sure, if this is a LW-KB...

and some famous photo from SS-KB near Leningrad 1942, also Arriflex (often supposed by 5. SS)

The LW guys looks like a ranking officer filming some home video. I can not imagine 8mm being useful for theater use.
