It may be some sort of amplifier ... sadly there is no good picture of the schematic nor the manual.
And yes, it uses a tube just like most amplifiers did during this time .... the type of tube used should be marked on the schematic.

I've forgotten the name of this doo-dad but it is basically a box of tricks which allows a morse key and headphones to be added into a telephone line. This is not normally possible as the morse key has no independent power unit, and the phones themselves have no way of powering it using the 1,5V wet cells. These don't work with a single line and phantom earth return, they must have 2 wire inputs.
The first picture shows the selector switch which allows either morse (telegr.) and speech (sprecher). When it's being carried, the metal plate below slides up to protect the switch.
In the second picture, the lines come in and out at the left (the 2 Ltg terminals) a phone can be inserted on the 2 right terminals The headphones and morse key go in the 2 sockets marked kopfhöher and taste respectively.
It did indeed use a tube/valve, this was inserted into the circular hole on the right. You can see it in the schematic in the lid as the oval shape towards the right side. I can find out which one as I have a list of valves etc., although the type is probably revealed in the small text adjacent to it on the schematic.
If you are wanting to sell this, I'd be very interested.
