New radio set

Post by Feldjager »

This arrived today. Much to my surprise (a) it still works and receives and (b) I'm still alive after using the original 1000V generator unit (which has been PAT tested!).

This is a 100 watt sender unit, which was most commonly twinned with the torn E b receiver (Fu11 SE100 configuration) or the LwEa receiver. Both these pairings were usually used in either the Kfz61 or 72 vehicles.

It operated within the range of 0.2 - 1.2 MHz.

Case and cover:

Radio itself. The section with the grille houses the 3 large RS237 and RS241 valves, each of which lights up like a 40W light bulb.

Manufacturers plate with date - the 'Ark' means it has been made for arctic temperatures of up to -30 degrees

It throws out a fair bit of heat.

Marshmallows toasting by an open RS237 valve...

A bit more for the setup...

This is the telescopic mast antenna set, version A. It is an 8 metre tall antenna which can either be used mounted on a vehicle (as below) or free standing. It extends by means of a crank at the bottom which operates a series of wires - it can be fully extended in about 20 seconds with minimal effort. My antenna is currently undergoing restoration, but is fully operational.

The picture above shows the asset plate on the base of the mast. It's labelled 'Kmg Ausf A' (kurbelmastgerät, Ausführung A - telescopic mast, version A. The picture below shows the spirit level used for levelling the mast during free standing set up.

Finally, the mast almost fully retracted (it's still 185cm tall). The steel cables have fouled in the bottom and need replacing asit got caught in the gears and is split in places. The wires are overly complex for what it is!

I'll see if I can locate any - amateur radio fairs are better than militaria ones for that sort of thing.

Hi,

Just signed up for this web forum.

Here is photo of an antenna I have, worried looking chap is looking at sky, as we did this during one of last Julys big lightening storms. Well it seemed like a good idea at the time. I have a Star antenna for top but we thoguht it was pushing our luck!!!!

I am in process of gathering parts of a Steyr radio box type, KFZ 17, I have not gone near radios for inside yet.

I have another one and a half of this style atenna, if any one needs it, needs some TLC to work, may not but would look fine on back of truck.

Dave yuor sets look great.

cheers,

Gerard

I have the ausf 'a' version of that antenna (I think that is the 'c' from the number of sections). Mine will eventually be mounted on the back of a kfz 61 truck.

I need to replace the cables in mine as they are badly frayed - have you attempted this at all?

Hi,

No I just took it out of German shipping box, which was well mashed, took the mid 60's motor cycle kick starter which was supplied as raising handle and off it went. from this experience it looks like it is simply one length of cable going into the winch housing, then waving up the mast.

I am looking for the correct style of folding handle like yours, know any one who has one for swoop / sell ??

cheers,

Gerard
