Connecting desk phones to the field telephone switchboard,

Post by svdwal »

Hi all,

I've got a small issue with connecting 2 desk telephones to my switchboard.
The switchboard functions perfectly with field telephones, but not with the desk telephones.
Difference between the field telephones and deskphones is that a fieldtelephone has its own powersuppy and the deskphones do not.
How can i make it work of provide the desk telephones with power?

Who can help?

Hello there,

your desk phones if used in their normal environment (in a barracks/office etc) would have got their power from the pbx (building phone system), so there would be power supplied via the phone line.

The field telephones as you state have their own power supply (charging handle or similar?).

If you can measure the power supplied to the field telephones, you may be able to rig up a similar power supply system to the desk phones.

Thanks for your answer,

That is indeed what i'm looking for, a powersupply and some kind of wiring diagram.
I'm sure it isn't as simply as just put an battery in between :-)

Maybe our beloved feldjager has a cunning idea?

I wish I could give you the information you need for the old phones - I work with Cisco modern PoE (power from IP switches to handsets) or Cisco phones with their own power supplies - A huge difference in technology and age - but actually not that far away from your re-enactment setup

There is a power unit box which allows the desk phones to be connected to a field network.

The problem is that the desk phones rely on the power being supplied remotely, as with any analogue system, whereas the field phones have the power locally and the exchanges utilise this. I've only ever seen the box in manuals, so I have no idea what the internal configuration is.

I am assuming you mean the official issue desk phones, rather than a generic 1930s/40 civilian type phone?
