Pre war money?

Post by dogman55 »

I am relatively new to the money aspect of the German Reich. I recently went to the local coin shop and found some Pfennings from between 1888 and 1926. Would these have still been legal tender? I would assume so as our quarters in the US are still legal tender from 1955 and before. I just thought I would ask before I look stupid using prewar money. Any help is appreciated. Thanks,
Brian

No not if you are using them for your WW2 portrayal, please do not base world currency
on the US Dollar which to be honest has kept its value and the Country has always
remained a "Republic" unlike Germany which had different rulers and dictatorships.

Germany unlike the US went through quite a few different changes from the time zone
you mentioned, for instance in 1888, German was an Imperial Country with a King (the
Kaiser), then after 1918 Germany went into the Weimer Republic phase then their monetary
system changed again and so much during that period during the 1920's the Deutche Mark
was worthless, banknotes up the value of 100 Million Marks were being used to buy loaves
of bread, then 1933 come along, the money was called the Reich Mark and inflation was
lowered, also coinage bore the German eagle and Swastika for one thing so you cannot
used coins from the Imperial period and the Weimar period due to these reasons.

Thanks, for the reply. That explanation makes sense now that I think about it.
