Arnhem & Aachen - Recomended hotels.

Post by jimmyvonk »

Hello All,

Next year planning a bit of a road trip, and planning to stay a couple of nights in both Arnhem & Aachen.

Just wondering if anyone that's been before can recomend a nice, reasonably priced hotel, walking distance to town, somewhere to park the Enfield. :)

If you're feeling rich there's the Quellenhof (now the Sofitel Quellenhof) Where the brave Fallschirmjaeger fought the US army to the last champagne bottle! Many dead were buried in its gounds (All removed now)

There's a city Centre Novotel....

The Mercure is quite central and reasonably priced although its about a fiver a day to park.....

Hotel Baccara is basic, clean, cheap and within walking distance over the large railway bridge that marks the site of many battles for the (now gone) station and marshalling yards. It's on TurmStraße and I've stayed there.

Be prepared to go out for a drive each day to see stuff. Aachen is great to base yourself in for the Heurtgenwald but not much remains in the city - DO go up to see the bunkers though.
They can be found on Goffartstraße, Scheibenstraße (Good streetart on this one depicting the Westwall etc.), Junkerstraße, Lütticherstraße and Wittekindstraße.....

You can still see some good bunkers but take a trip to the museum at Vossenach and talk to the guy there (VERY LITTLE english spoken) - he will point you at some cool concrete!!!!!

Citywise - medieval, modern, friendly.... Golden Unicorn does nice food. The Postwagen tucked in under the Rathaus is a top place for a drink - If the barman is still the one who looks live Dave Stewart of the Eurythmics - quietly as about "veteraner" - they usually sit upstairs.... There's a Brauhaus (can't remember where it was!) and you have to buy Printen - Gingerbread based sweeties..... MMMMMMM! Zum Schiffgen is a top spot and serves traditional German nosh. Thursdays on the town square is student night - see how THEY celebrate it!

Visit the Cathedral too - Heinrich the Fowler was taken with it and Charlemagne is buried there.... His throne can be seen too.

Above all James - enjoy it.

Cheers for that Paul,

thanks for all the pointers, will investigate - the bunker locations are good to know, as are the places to eat.

We're only planning to go for one day/2 nights as part of a tour - mostly going to see the Charlemagne stuff etc.

Our initial route plan is...
Day 1 - Home via Dunkerque to Oostende - Stay one night in Oostende
Day 2 - Oostende to Valkenswaard - Stay one night
Day 3 - Valkenswaard to Arnhem via Eindhoven, Son, Veghel, Uden, Grave, Nijmegen - HELLS HIGHWAY. - Stay 2 nights in Arnhem.
Day 4 - Relaxed day in Arnhem - museums, bridges etc.
Day 5 - Arnhem to Aachen via Venlo - 2 nights in Aachen.
Day 6 - Relaxed day in Aachen, Charlemagne etc.
Day 7 - Aachen to Waterloo - Stay 2 nights in Waterloo
Day 8 - Relaxed day in Waterloo - Battlefield, museums.
Day 9 - Waterloo to Ypres - Stay 2 nights in Ypres.
Day 10 - Relaxed day in Ypres - battlefieds, monuments, last post.
Day 11 - Ypres to Home via Dunkerque.

That way we get to see LOTS of different historical places... especially on the Enfield as it's slow enough to actually see things! :)

Top Trip Jim!

Some super places on that itinerary too... I like the freedom of a set of wheels although I'm rather more sedate - apart from that TT in the Harz!!!!!
