New to the Feldgendarmerie

Post by Gefreiter »

Well I've been in Heer Infanterie reenacting for some time now, but finaly decided to start a Feldgenarmerie impression. I am brand new to it. All I have as of now are FG shoulder boards. I am wanting to make this a "first person" impression, so does anyone have any files to make some period documents for? Also does anyone have any "words of advice/wisdom" for the new guy? I really want to do this right.
Thanks!

Have a look at www.feldgendarmerie.co.uk for some more details on the admin side (galleries mainly). I have some bits and pieces I can probably help out with.

I am wanting to do a Heer impression. Would it be better to carry a PPK or a Kar98K?

Dave, do you mean you have extra items you would be willing to sell? Also, the link you posted has some very good information on it, thanks for sharing it.

Have a look at original photos - k98 was by far the most common weapons for the FG, the pistol was issued but in lesser numbers (have a look on the website as I cited the KstN weapons allocation for a trupp). MPi were only ever issued to vehicle drivers and a couple of others - their use was limited, but study original photos for the deviations to the rule!

What are you after? I've got a few bits and pieces that are surplus to requirements, I'd have to have a look and see what they are though! Things you should have are a Feldgendarmerievorschriften (signed in and out at the start and end of each shift) along with the 'Tagebuch' which is basically a version of a policeman's pocketbook. One of the guys in the group makes both of these, I'll see if he has any left from the last run.

Ok, thanks. I really appreciate it. I've gone through almost all the original photos from your website, very informative! I'm really looking forward to putting this impression together.

Where is the best place to purchase a Gorget and winkerkelle?

You can get gorgets from most dealers - the 'button's need replacing as they sit too proud, and the yellow paint needs dulling down. If you keep your eyes on eBay, occasionally some of the high quality fakes turn up being old as repro. They usually go for around £50-70 but are indistinguishable from an original to the untrained eye.

Winkerkelle pop up from time to time on dealers sites and eBay. Do not buy anything with the police eagle in the centre and any polizei/feldgendarmerie wording on as they are a fantasy item - there is no evidence to support their existence. These were not an issue item, but were taken from vehicles (every German military vehicle was equipped with one for hand signals).

Some other items were not personal issue as well - gorget, rubber motorcyclists coats and handcuffs so don't put them in your soldbuch!

Other bits to try and get hold of (not for field use though) are:
Handcuffs:

This is made of a very hard and solid rubber - it does flex a little, but not much!).

So I take it that to transfer to the FG from a Heer Infantry impression I will need these items?

Gorget
Feldbluse w/FG insignia
Rubber coat
winkerkelle

And what is the list of documents? I am sorry for all the questions, I just don't want to over look anything.
Thanks!

You'll need (as a minimum):
Feldbluse
Trousers
Shirt
Boots (or low boots & gaiters)
Belt
Head dress
Gorget - worn only when on duty
Sidearm (bayonet)

Optional:
Rubber coat - only if you are portraying a motorcyclist
Winkerkelle - used for traffic control duties.
Handcuffs/baton (garrison role only, very little evidence for use in the field)

Alright, I have been looking around at any and all FG original photos, and it seems like Unterfeldwebel would be a very common rank to portray, what do you all think? Also, what documents should I have on my person while "on duty"?
Thanks,

Alright, after digging through some threads, is this about all the documents I will need?

Meldeblock
Feldgendarmerie Vorschriften
Tagebuch
Penalty ticket Books

Where might I find reproductions on these items?
Thanks!
