Post war Feldgendarmerie
Note that they are still armed as a British Staghound (?) passes by. In the original picture (which is somewhat better quality than this one), the trousers on the guy nearest the camera are splinter A pattern. You can also see the gorget chain on the man furthest away.

I've seen this picture in several books over the years, with varying dates:
1: October 1944
2: July/August 1945
3: January 1946
Problem is, all are theoretically possible. If it is the latter, they could be Feldjagerkorps.
You can't see it here, but the guy nearest still has his breast eagle removed (not that it helps date the photo particularly!).

Exact location is unknown (original photo has no annotations on the back). It has been put at Luxemburg or the French/German border - but these are purely supposition.

Feldgendarmerie and Feldjagerkorps were both employed in this manner - the latter lasted longer and remained armed until 1946 (making the later date possible).
Architecture is not uniquely Germanic. My significant other (who knows these things!) has said its a style fairly general to the Continent, but it looks 'revivalesque' rather than old, if you know what I mean.

RE: Architecture, I totally agree, revivalesque as in the Victorian/Edwardian era whereby all the landed gentry built stately homes to look like castles?
Yup, pretty much - like Gothic revivial during the Victorian period.
