Reinhard Tristan Eugen Heydrich (7 March 1904-4 June 1942)

Post by Jonny »

Found this on Youtube... 8)

Reinhard Tristan Eugen Heydrich (7 March 1904 -- 4 June 1942) was an SS-Obergruppenführer, chief of the Reich Security Main Office (including the Gestapo, SD and Kripo Nazi police agencies) and Reichsprotektor (Reich Protector) of Bohemia and Moravia. Adolf Hitler considered him a possible successor. When the Nazis moved the headquarters of Interpol to Berlin he was chosen as the President of that international law enforcement agency. Heydrich chaired the 1942 Wannsee conference, which finalized plans for the extermination of all European Jews in what is now referred to as the Holocaust. Heydrich was wounded in an assassination attempt in Prague on 27 May 1942 and died over a week later from complications arising from his injuries.Early lifeHalle an der Saale to composer Richard Bruno Heydrich and his wife Elisabeth Anna Maria Amalia Kranz; Heydrich held a life-long passion for the violin. His two forenames were patriotic musical references: "Reinhard" from Amen, an opera written by his father, in a portion called "Reinhard's Crime". His first middle name, 'Tristan' stems from Wagner's Tristan und Isolde. His third name probably derives from military hero Prince Eugene of Savoy, Eugen in German (the German cruiser Prinz Eugen was also named for Eugene of Savoy, as was the 7th Division of the Waffen-SS).

As a young boy, Heydrich was teased for his high pitched voice and his devout Catholicism in a mostly Protestant town.

Although shy, Heydrich excelled physically and grew handsome and fit, excelling in fencing and swimming. Too young to have fought in World War I, he joined the quasi-military Freikorps after the war.

In 1922, Heydrich joined the navy, but he was dismissed in 1931 (Bullock 1962). The dismissal never has been satisfactorily explained.

Heydrich's own version was that he had intercourse with, then refused to marry, a woman whose important industrialist father was a major naval contractor, and friend of Erich Raeder, the commander-in-chief of the German Navy. The woman revealed her difficulties to her father, who took the matter to Raeder. Admiral Raeder summoned Heydrich to his office where he and the aggrieved father demanded that Heydrich marry the girl, only to be told that he already was engaged to Lina von Osten, and considered himself bound by his "honour as a naval officer" to not dissolve the engagement. At this, the appalled Raeder is supposed to have summarily cashiered Heydrich. The tale is apparently false. Intensive post-war efforts by journalists failed to identify the woman, though Heydrich's version would have her as socially prominent. Raeder himself scoffed at that tale, while refusing to disclose his reasons for sacking Heydrich.

Another version was that the girl in question was upset at Heydrich's engagement to Lina von Osten because she was under the belief that he would marry her. She complained to her father who went to Raeder. During the court of inquiry summoned by Raeder, Heydrich's contemptuous answers did not help his case and though he was exonerated, the officers demanded that he be cashiered for "conduct unbecoming a naval officer".

This leaves the question as to why Heydrich would have concocted a tale which clearly discredited him, and why would Lina Heydrich and others also maintain that Heydrich was contemptuous of the Nazis before his dismissal from the navy, which others of his acquaintance at the time categorically deny. One theory was submitted by Edouard Calic, namely that Heydrich was discharged once it emerged that he had been spying on the navy in the service of the Nazis. While Heydrich's political convictions and fascination with espionage would make this feasible and would explain why SS chief Heinrich Himmler appointed him to head the SD immediately following his discharge, direct evidence is lacking.

Heydrich was a man of some courage , he flew in the B of B with the Luftwaffe , flew ME-109's over Russia but was shot down by flak and had to be rescued from behind Russian lines after which Hitler forbade him to fly in combat missions.
He did not think twice about confronting Jozef Gabcik and Jan Kubis when they attacked his car but he was a victim of his own overconfidence and self belief in his absolute control of the Czechs.

He was a killer , he formulated the orders for the Final Solution into a structure and gathered the reins of power into his own hands.
Whilst I can admire him as being a cut above the men he rubbed shoulders with his intelligence and drive were subordinated to a cause which was rotten to the core. Heydrich has been well treated by history for the murderer which he allowed himself to become.
Had he survived he would have been the dominant figure at Nuremberg and what he had to say would have been worth listening to.
In the film beside him Carl Hermann Frank - a Sudeten German who was committed to the destruction of everything Czech , Kurt Delauge replaced Heydrich and along with Frank extracted a bloody revenge on the Czechs for the death of Heydrich.

See Max Williams biography of Heydrich

and the Czech book "Heydrich" by Jaroslav Cvancara for an excellent photographic record of his career in Prague.

This book shows an extensive photographic record of his career , his assassination , his funeral and the destruction of Czech villages which followed as an act of revenge and retribution.

A friend in the course of a telephone conversation a few nights ago mentioned that he had found a photo signed by a certain Ex- Auschwitz- Birkenau Doctor - a nasty little bastard who happened to drowned some 40 years after he should have been hanged.
Was I going to buy it ?
No not a chance .....I would not have it for free.
Himmler's signature - no he was a man of no substance in terms of history.
Heydrich - yes I would certainly consider buying his signature but this does not change what he was and I am mindful of this.... this comment did surprise my friend as he never would have imagined that I would consider such an ownership.

A intresting topic gents which seems to have a lot of stories suurrounding it, whether true or
not i don't know but will share them, apparantly according to some sources, there were
traces of poison in Heydrich's bloodstream which were found after the autopsy, also Himmler
had placed a Stenographer by Heydrich's bedside to record his feverish ramblings when going
under the knife, some believe that Himmler had Heydrich murdered because he became too
powerfull??, apparantly Himmler wanted to know the where abouts of Heydrich's secret
personal files which had information on every powerful figure in Germany at that time.

Also it is strange that the Czech assasins were not given the chance to surrender (Himmlers
orders), even one of the men who had been captured at the beginning was shot before been
given the chance to talk, which apparantly he was going to do so willingly. (who knows what
might have been revealed??)

Also another little story was that Heydrich was a keen horseman and when in Berlin used to
take a ride every morning with no other than his rival Admiral Canaris!!! lol

Regards to some of you, Pipes

Heydrich was known to Carnaris when Heydrich had been a junior naval officer and the two men were life long friends .
The men who were trapped in the Church ( including those who had killed Heydrich) had determined that they would not to be taken alive - they knew what capture would have meant. (Torture and eventual death.)
The poison aspect - parts of the car upholstery had been forced in Heydrich's body when the bomb thrown by Kubiš exploded , it was this which caused his death by septicaemia.
(Treatment with transfusions and sulphonamide drugs failed).
Himmler and Heydrich were on good terms and it is unlikely that Himmler had him killed or the Himmler's own physician who was flown to Prague to direct Heydrich's treatment went there with the mission of ensuring Heydrich died.
The Czechs were given the opportunity to surrender , Čurda was produced in order to try and make them give up , promises and threats being employed.
( He was pressed into the service of the SD and was later hanged by the Czechs. in 1947 having been found guilty of treason).

Thanks Tychsen, for the heads up

I think perhaps Himmler was still a bit worried incase Heydrich's explosive secret files got into
the wrong hands, you probably know about the rumour about Heydrich's Grandmother being
Jewish, apparantly he even went to the extreme of having the grave headstone removed, so
it appears not even Heydrich was immuned to investigation and rumours???

Peiper , yes had heard the rumours of his having " a little Jew blood in him" . ("Conspiracy").
Perhaps more from those who were his rivals or feared his growing power and influence.
As far as I am aware his files on other party members have never surfaced , perhaps Himmler had them destroyed after his death ?

One was killed not long after his death , knocked down by a truck outside of the residence the Heydrich family remained in until leaving the "Protectorate" .
Her surviving son is still alive
Lena Heydrich went to live in the Baltic - she ran a large guest house there , again a home she had once shared with Heydrich - as far as I can recall she ran it with her daughter.
She remained "loyal" to the memory of her husband .

Heydrich did have the grave headstone of a grandmothers removed. Together with two pages of the church records that were cut out. Might be untrue but it is an interesting story. He was very gifted and I fully understand the efforts to have him assassinated. Some believe that he was sent to Prague in exile but he was sent there to get the vital Czech armament industry there to deliver the arms they needed. Czech armament industry got production lines for both MG34 and P38 during WW2. Avia continued to manufacture Me262’s after WW2 until the communists ended production. At a museum in Prague thay have a 262 placed next to the junk they had to buy from the Soviet union.

Heydrich had an “interesting” laugh, small shoulders and broad hips and was nicknamed “the goat”. Another interesting trivia is that they destroyed the “wrong” Lidice. There are two Lidice villages and they chose the wrong Lidice next to Prague…..

A very interesting read was Adolf Hitler, and the spear of Longinus.
The Nazis did not leave one stone unturned in any aspect when it came to ruling the world. This spear head was seized in austria, and fabled to be the very spear head that lanced the side of Christ at Golgotha. The nazis had a whole division devoted to the occult. At any rate, the reason i bring this up is that according to the book,Heydrich was one of three people rumored to know how to wield the power of this lance. Just before his death he did some writting. Some say a letter to his succesor on the lances use and detailed instruction. The letter never reached this man as he was no longer alive. The poison rumor may have ties to this.
I totally recomend reading thid book if you havent. Its obe of the more obscure and lesser known bits of history within the riech. I have an autograpehed copy of this book...
