from the small amount of reading i gather that this was an amazing smg, better than ppsh41 by most accounts

It's certainly heavier! (As a result it was probably more accurate). It fired a more useful round (9mm) and worked in the coldest of weather - important as in really cold weather the spring on the PPSh drum magazine tended to break, one of the main reasons for the transit to a stick magazine as the war went on.
Not used in fantastic numbers in the Winter War, but increasingly common as the Continuation War went on.

I don't think any were officially, but it's possible that some of the German units in Finland picked them up. I don't think the Red Army would have used them - different ammo calibre and PPShs were in wide enough supply. Ammo calibre wouldn't have been a problem with the Wehrmacht, of course.

just thinking about future buys, much cheaper than an mp40 at any rate, and in my view better, only bad thing is weight

I can't see it moving far from the Finnish front, but I suppose it could be a private purchase, or from a soldier who had served with 163/169 ID or SS 6th GbjD. Or knew someone who did.
