Midwar STABSGEFREITER Chevrons

Post by gebirgs soldat »

My unit leader, 14th K. FJR-6 (Ca. RPS) directed me to obtain Stabsgefreiter chevrons.. mid-war..
If I am correct that is two stripes with a pip above?

I know that pre-war had three stripes and that the rank was eliminated or suspended during the early part of the war..

I've found only two sources I know... hessenantique and at the front.. that sells the obergefreiter sleeve patch..

MY MAIN QUESTION: do I get obergefreiter (two stripes) and just add the pip to it to make the stabgefreiter rank?

Thanks, WALT

Stabsgefreiter rank was introduced into the Luftwaffe on 4th February 1944, two chevrons and rank star, replacing the three chevron Hauptgefreiter rank.
The only problem is I don't know if this applies to Fallschirmjager, and if it was Luftwaffe chevron or Heer chevron.
I assume it is Luftwaffe... can anyone else clarify?

You say mid war? Stabsgefreiter may be the wrong style of rank chevron for your impression.

In U.S. reenacting terms... Feb 1944 IS mid-war (July '43 to Oct '44)... you mentioned a rank star... is that the same as a "pip"?

I don't see much original insignia in California.. except at outrageous prices! Thanks for the info.. WALT

You are correct, late war pip was added! However stabsgefrieter was a rare rank in the luftwaffe and those who were promoted missed that rank and ended up as an unteroffizer(taditions, etc of the luftwaffe, thanks Paul)

Thanks for the input guys.. I ordered the chevrons & pip today.. My unit leader mentioned that it would be a temporary promotion and I would transition shortly (late spring 2010) into the unteroffizier rank... I'm helping an NCO aspirant learn the ropes of corralling cats (jaegers) using German commands, etc.. and acting as the muscle at meetings etc.. (30 years doing LAPD helps out)...

Thanks again.. WALT

Dagda is right. It was a rare rank and usually missed in transition.

If you're looking for good quality insignia, try this link:

Very helpful and maybe a little pricey but the workmanship is very good.
