Gebirgsjägers in knochensack?

Post by Murdoc »

Grüß Bergkameraden!

There is an interesting illustration in one of the Osprey's books about gebirgsjäger.
GJ in knochensack ... The illustration is about "battle off Narvik". I said illustration, so not photo!

-Do they wear knochensack and jump out of airplanes, or they been trasported with glider planes (I read the book, but don't remeber about that)? Maybe to Norway and Crete???

-If the worn exceptionally knochensacks, do they ever saw their edelweiss path on their knochensack?

Photos are also welcome!

Rob

I find that very unlikely, that GJ jump out of airplanes. They were airlifted yes, but jumping, and in smocks? There are instances were illustrations get it wrong. Which osprey book are you referring to and which page?

I can only recall ever seeing pictures of one Gebirgsjäger jumper preparing for the Wesserubung jump, his smock was a green step in model with standard LW breast eagle and no other insignia. His jump helmet was also standard LW issue, and I am wanting to say that it had the LW eagle decal present...but my memory is fading!?

I have also seen 2 portraits of veterans of the jump as they were recognizable by their Narvikshchields and LW parachustist bages.

Horrido!

I'm fairly sure that GJ jumped at Narvik ,though only a small number - I've seen pictures of them in FJ uniform , though they're rare . I have seen portraits of GJ wearing jump badges however .

Had a quick look on the PE forum - with thanks to " Papa " Kiser for the info ;

About 2 Companies ( 200 men ) from GJR 137 were given a crash course ( 3 Jumps ) in parachuting and jumped at Narvik . One photo I've seen is of a GJ wearing the smock , putting on a FJ pattern helmet prior to jumping .

Hope this is of some help :D

Nice! Danke sehr!

On the 2nd in black (or in dark uniform) on the right are sailors?

I'll post that Osprey's illustration if I'll be at home...

2 Kompanies of GJR 137 jumped into Narvik.

They wore FJ gear, and where awarded the Fallschirmschützenabzeichen accordingly.

Thanks for posting the pictures Goethe - Christian , well spotted , chap at front right seems to be wearing a similar pattern coat too , though I'm not sure what it is :?:

First portrait , great combination of uniform and awards , especially use of '34-'38 pattern Schulterklappen on what I presume is an M40 tunic ...
