Rope via carabiner or leather loop,

both - just to make sure its both safe from falling down and doesn't interfere with movement.

One of my all time favourites, Dietl c.1934 on manoeuvres.
You can clearly see the two tone reversible white/grey of his Reichswehr issued Windjacke...man I'd love to own one of those..
