Thanks for the information Patrick, so I can now carry on and sew my badge onto my left pocket, as also I have found out that awards go onto the left pocket and the Mountain Leader badge was an award as such.

Once again thanks for all your help in clearing this up.

Servus Bergführer Jeff,

Glad to help. Does your group do any rock climbing training? My unit usually has a training weekend where we teach everyone basic climbing techniques. Climb on!

I've not seen any photographic evidence either. Since the W-SS Bergführer badge wasn't introduced until October 1944 and the war was over about 6 months later, I don't think many would have been issued...maybe only instructors at the W-SS Hochgebirgsschule in Neustift (Austria), since none of the W-SS actually operated in High Alpine areas, there wasn't a big need for W-SS Bergführers.

Here's a W-SS Officer's Bergführer badge in my collection:

As for the Army Gebirgsjägers, there were only about 380 Heeresbergführer badges issued during the whole war...not that many when you look at it.

No I am afraid we do not do any climbing.

The last time I did any serious climbing was in 1989, when I was trying to do as many of the extreme climbs in Wales.

This is interesting. Was the US Army Intelligence report on German Mountain Warfare confused on what exactly a Heeresbergführer was? Or was there some special extra qualification for a Heeresbergführer to be awarded a Heeresbergführer badge? The report refers to Heeresbergführer as mountain-guides, and states "The Germans estimate that in every mountain unit at least one man in three should be an Army mountain guide." If there was some confusion here, might it also explain why the report also notes that most Heeresbergführer did not wear a Heeresbergführer badge?

One thing is the ratio of HBFx men that should be. The other is that, acording to Kaltenegger, there were less than 400.
Not strange that a HBF badge can easely cost over 2000 Euros!

I'm looking for a decent copy of the HBF enamel badge for my display case. I found some for sale at Reddick Militaria but their version appears to have a stem to the Edelweiss. None of my references show this feature. Any recommended vendors for more accurate copies? The only one I've found so far is a European vendor selling them for E$120.

Reddick's version is on page 3 of this sale flyer:

Thanks! Also some nice Polizei Bergabzeichen there as well! I've never seen the last two although I am familiar with the modern Austrian version of the Gendarmerie Alpinist badge. Photos via "The Regalia Specialist"

Dear readers,
I'm not a friend of displaying something that I haven't the qualifications for or even better people do not know what it meant to be in such a liability as they were. Don't get me wrong but I think that has to do with respect for what people did or do.
Best regards,
chris
