can anyone help advise on the best RAL paint number for tan equipment?
i have used one tan in the past, but perhaps there is an 'olive tan' or more interesting tans out there than just plain 'tan tan'. the wehrmacht did have variants....
thanks in advance!
best ral paint for late war tan repaints
Re: best ral paint for late war tan repaints
Errm, not exactly sure what you are after? RAL 7028 is the wartime 'tan' but there is a 1943 and 1944 variation as the spec was changed. The 44 variant is the standard 'beige' one sees a lot on restored vehicles etc, the 1943 version is slightly warmer, or yellower. Unfortunately neither of these shades exist in the current RAL range.
As factory finishes, they were pretty consistent, it's the camo oversprays that vary widely as they were done locally, and the concentrated paste could be diluted with water or petrol, entirely up to you. It was often diluted with used engine oil as well (petrol was too precious) giving a different shade yet again.
I think by 'other tans' you are probably thinking of the the browner shades used on desert stuff. Happily these are still in the current RAL lists, and are good for repainting things like Trinkwasser containers. RAL 7008 is a brownish tan and RAL 8000 is a more 'mustard' tan. I would use the RAL 7008 myself as an alternative to RAL 7028 and indeed have restored several Trinkwasser 5L and 10L containers using it. Metal grenade cases turn up in RAL7008 too but I'd be a bit wary of doing much else. Never seen ammo tins in it for example?
Hope that helps!

David's answer couldn't be any clearer If you want some variation in shade you could always mix a little black or green in.
