Scho-ka-kola - Taking authenticity to the next level.

Post by Konzert-Meister »

Evening,

Restoring two original Scho-ka-kola tins and my Ostfront reproduction. Using black tape as per the original packaging. Taking authenticity to the next level. Scho-ka-kola arrived factory new and sealed, not half eaten. A nice touch to have it in the condition it was bought up to the front.

Modern contents placed inside, maybe the next step is to make a one piece slab with the horse logo? :P

Is the original plastic tape(like leccy tape?), or is it meant to be cloth tape, often found on fuse boxes, etc?

I know where you can get the cloth stuff!

I believe it's not cloth tape. More like the electrical tape. Here is a photo from a collection in Germany, I don't know if it's original tape or if the guy who owns them did it.

Here is a wartime commercial tin with the original seal. Which is clearly different to the Wehrmacht ones, with text. It also appears like a pasted paper.

One of my civilian ones has the remnants of the tin seal and it is indeed a form of paper. It can surely be reproduced with a bit of photoshop magic and a laserjet.

Yes, the last photo is the civi/commercial tin seal, with text. The Wehrmacht ones were plain black tape.

Anyone want to have a go a producing the civi seal? Need clear shots of the seal 360 though, which I don't have. :(

A couple of shots from the Wehrmacht Ration book. Post war top, wartime bottom. Different cocoa percentage.

This looks like original Wehrmacht packaging tape. The electrical tape is pretty close? Not sure what the red strands are, maybe it backs the whole tape? or maybe it's how you open it, like a pull tab...

I have 6 or 7 modern tins, empty. The originals and replica above have the modern Scho ka kola inside. Recipe is almost the same, modern ones have a higher cocoa percentage. I think 58% with wartime at 52.5%. The way the chocolate is moulded is very different but essentially the same. Originally it was two one piece slabs that you snapped into segments with the horse logo in the centre, wrapped in brown cellophane. Today it's the individual segments separated by a sheet of greaseproof paper.

It's available in the UK and across Europe. Loads on German ebay.

The red strings are likely to be rip cords, the label shouldn't be hard to reproduce at all. Has anyone got the circumference?
