I am delighted to announce the release of a new book called "Luftwaffe Eagles Over Ireland".

The story of German air crashes over neutral Ireland 1940 - 1945.

A major new work on Ireland’s Second World War history hits the bookshelves on October 26th this year. ‘Luftwaffe Eagles Over Ireland’ , written by Justin Horgan and Paddy Cummins (publishers http://www.horganpress.com) traces the relationship between neutral Ireland and Luftwaffe crews downed here during the Second World War.

More than 20 years of research brings to life the activities of the Luftwaffe over Ireland.
The writers use the crashes on neutral territory to inform readers how Ireland became a bolt-hole for German flyers in trouble. The Luftwaffe’s own battles with the Royal Air Force in the skies around Ireland resulted in many crash or forced landings and the sometimes heavy price crews paid as they tried to find safe landing sites in Ireland. The book traces the events surrounding these crashes, the response of local people to these landings in their midst and the extensive efforts to save crew members. The book includes interviews with many of the surviving crews from that period and produces a fascinating military and social history of that time.
It includes stories of the downed crews’ amazing time at Curragh Camp, honour bound to return after being allowed out to cinemas and local hostelries.
The book also examines the relationship between the crews and the local people, the marriages and the deep bonds that were created for these young Germans with Ireland for the rest of their lives.

A copy has been ordered , looking forward to seeing it in due course.
The relationship between Ireland, the Allied and Axis powers was complicated and has not always been accurately reported so Justin's book will be very welcome.

Justin your book arrived this am and one is not disappointed.
A quick description
the book is a hardback, quality of build is excellent paper quality is excellent and supports well what is a lavishly illustrated work. Photos are amazing and to me are all new , Justin uses a mass of photos taken at the time by Irish Army , civilian and from the Luftwaffe men themselves, photos taken at home and in Ireland when interned.
The photos and accountf the men interned are and will I think make great reading - it seems even today so odd that they should have turned up in Southern Ireland and again brought Eire into a diplomatic balancing act between the Allies and the Axis.
In the end and almsot from the start Ireland whilst neutral was sympathetic to the Allied cause and a token number of Allied aircrew were interned whilst most were quickly returned across the border along with the aircraft which crashed.
The text reads well and covers all Luftwaffe crashes / forcelandings and draws information from British , German and Irish Archives - accounts by those who were part of this history form the bedrock of the book.
I honestly have to say this is a very impressive book and JH deserves every success with it in recent years some very good material has emerged from Ireland and Justin's only adds to it.
Value for money , absolutely - I am not sure what the print run is but if you miss this one you have only yourself to blame. :)
Attached are a few sample pages mostly photographic in nature.
