Gretchen or Luscious Lips

Post by Pummelchen »

In general one can say that make-up was frowned upon by German women right up till the late 40´s.
Lipstick, mascara & other cosmetic items were associated mainly with prostitutes or girls that lived
life without morales.

The "Gretchen-type" promoted by the NSDAP did simply not use any decorative cosmetic,
they followed the ideology of "Schönheit&Glaube" and natural beauty.

In 1939 a man called Walter Friedmann started producing lipsticks in his private laboratory -
the brand name SANS SOUCIS was born and is still going in Germany today.

Nevertheless, German girls and women wanted to look just as beautiful as their idols seen
in UFA films. If one had the luck to obtain a lipstick, it would be "stretched" to the utmost
and used not only as lipstick, but as rouge as well.
Many decorative cosmetics and perfumes found their way into Germany from occupied France.
One of the brand names jumping to mind being Coty and its perfume "Soir de Paris".

.......and if you weren´t that lucky, well one did use what nature offered. Cherries for example,
when rubbed on your cheeks give you a very healthy look.
