Ambush Cam

Post by PanzerHauptman »

Does anyone have any original colour photos of vehicles painted in 3 colour ambush (Normandy) cam? Particularly with the dot pattern applied over the top.

All info appreciated,

Many thanks.

What do you want to know in particular?
Shape of "dots was either "dickiebow" or "Halfmoon" Dickiebow was applied with a piece of sponge or cloth held tightly in the middle (hence the dickiebow shape) Halfmoon was done with a small brush and a flick of the wrist giving the semicircular shape with a point where the brush lifts off.

Colour contrast was varied but seen are the following
Green Base - Yellow Dots
Brown Base - Green Dots
Yellow Base - Brown Dots

Green Base - Brown Dots
Brown Base - Yellow Dots
Yellow Base - Green Dots

Green Base - Brown AND Yellow Dots
Brown Base - Green AND Yellow Dots
Yellow Base - Go on - Guess.....

Ambush was not often seen on small vehicles it tends to get too messy on small surfaces. Reserved mainly for tanks and SPW possibly the larger Kfz such as Horch and Steyr.

NB
There are even recorded instances of Grey or even White dots being added to the scheme. This would appear to be where tricoloured vehicles were ordered or required to be "ambushed" but there was no green, brown or yellow paint available.

Hope this helps.

For Normandy you wouldnt see much paint under all the bushes , trees, general vegetation covering the vehicles

but as Hoffy said bigger vehicles tanks , Jagdpanzers, etc for ambush type paintwork
Theres a couple of good illustrations of this in Jean Restayns book Tanks of WW2

The Sturmpanzer pic isn't strictly the 'ambush' scheme but another one made by covering areas of (say) dunkelgelb with slightly overlapping circles (via a template). The spaces where the circles don't overlap shows the base colour in a similar 'spotty' way... then there's the 'Octopus' scheme... no end of ways to camo your 1:35 or 1:1 scale German vehicle... :D
