Currently restoring a 1944 VW kubelwagen and looking for some parts, including the following:

Rear lever arm shock absorbers.
Front torsion bars.
Front torsion/link arms.
Front king pin assemblies.

If you have these or any other kubel parts for sale please let me know.

Tommy your best bet is to join the rest of us Kubel mongs on the 166 forum, the parts you seek are not that easy to come by these days.

I have a very early beetle front beam that you could possibly rob torsion bars from for the kubel - not sure if the spring rate is different though (or anything else for that matter)

Sturmschar, I have asked on there and I keep checking the classifieds but nothing so far, I'll keep trying though.

Wolfsangel, appreciate the offer, could you possibly measure the torsion bars for me, I know Typ 82 ones are longer than regular Beetle but I'm not sure about very early Beetles. Is it a complete beam you have? any chance of some photos when you have time?

Tommy - you can use the early Beetle (46-51) set up it bolts straight on the speedo connection is early Beetle (through the hub). I have this set up on my 44 so I also am also trying to source the Kubel set up but is damm difficult to find.

Thanks for the information Sturmschar, so the shock towers will clear the body? At least that way I'll be able to get it up and running whilst searching those elusive parts.

One of my other hobby's out side reenacting is restoring old VWs pre 1962 with Beetles and pre 1968 with VW vans . I just thought I would share this information with you it might help or might not

Different year VW cars used different numbers of top and Bottom Torsion spring combinations
1945 to Mid April 1949 Four (4) Bottom Five (5) Top
Mid April Five (5) Bottom and (4) Top
1950 Five (5) Bottom and (5) Top
October 1952 Six (6) Bottom and (6) Top
In August 1953 Chassis Number 1-0517 3004 Eight Bottom (8) Eight (8) Top
If I remember right Kubelwagens did not have shock absorbers on the front


The front spindles of the Kubelwagen had offset axles compared with the Beetle to gain added road clearance this same set up was used on the Type 2

As you're involved with vw buses, could you tell me if bus front torsion bars are round? I was looking at the possibilty of using bus torsion arms for the kubel but I'm sure they have a round hole for the torsion bar, unless I can plug the holes and form 18mm square hole!

Btw, Kubels have small shock absorbers mounted from the beam end plate to the upper torsion/link arm.

Tommy Thanks Yes Now I remember only ever worked on two Kubelwagens and even then it was ass end work ,its the same as the pre August 1949 model then its a very short one made by Hemscheidt it was a single acting shock .

Bus Torsion bars are flat like the beetles the numbers change on Some Chassis numbers

Tommy I dont think you will as the bus axle is larger than the type 1 (Kubel and Beetle ) I think it was Ultra VW or Voksworld had a large write up on a Kubel kit it could be worth looking at how he did it
