Militracks German Vehicle Show 2012 (Overloon, Holland)

Post by Sturmschar »

I had a teriffic weekend at this event, its quite unusual and innovative it makes the shows on offer in this country seem very pedestrian. Firstly its all German vehicles, though they do a similar event for allied later in the year, secondly all the vehicles are constantly on the move around a one mile track through the beautiful woodland around the Liberty Park museum. The public are charged to ride on ALL the vehicles, Militracks provide the fuel and ensure that all the participants are fed and watered all weekend! Can anyone imagine Rex Cadnam doing that? In my opinion the only event which comes close to this in the UK is the Victory show though it does not have the public participation. They also successfully staged a world record attempt at the most Kettenkrads on a two mile convoy, which was seventeen, authenticated by the Guinness Book of records. I was privilidged to have taken part driving one of Bruce Cromptons Kettenkrads.

Yes Andy I can - Perhaps you should come up to the mess tent and see how many people are sat down, fed and watered from 07.00 onwards? Ask Rex how many packed lunches he sends out and come after the public leave each day to see how many people sit down to a well deserved evening meal.........

Remember W&P has grown from a show very much like Overloon into the huge monster it is today..... And it's constantly growing and evolving. Overloon is with respect a rich boys drive around....... I've spent time looking at the vids etc. I'd love to participate - sans uniform and with the ethos of the show in mind....... Each show should rightly have its own individual character. You cite Victory - It works hard to put on something that both public and participant can enjoy......... long may it continue.

I remember trying some years ago to get a Germanfest going - I was roundly shouted down due to people's concerns at adverse publicity........ I'd still dearly love to have a motorised event like Overloon here - Perhaps we could persuade the Trippel driver to let us use his venue? :D

And the T34 snuck in thus ruining the "all German" status..... Damn those pesky Bolsheviks!

Nice show though..... VERY nice show.....

Paul I am not sure Bruce would agree and I am certainly not talking about catering for those who are working for W&P, perhaps the folk who at their own expense lug all their kit vehicles etc to W&P, have to put up with the Barmy Army, overpriced beer, overpriced woeful food, unsanitary toilets and the odd malicious journalist might not either. Dont quite get the reference to KW.

Lovely photos as well and many thanks for placing up, You do bring up and interesting proposition here as well, that those attending shows hogging their gear and paying expensive petrol costs should perhaps be looked after by the events coordinators as after all they are bringing a Living history display to a show were in some cases profits are made by the host.

Yesterday I attended the biggest show that is held in Ireland each year and it covers a multiperiod of vehicles and groups and stalls and to be honest we were all very well catered from what I could see as we were given vouchers for food and refreshments which is in general what the organisers do every year and it's gratefully accepted.

The nearest I have ever come to this when abroad in England has been when I attended events and the Frau section of Das Reich provide an excellent subsadised array of food and refreshments for every one and any one that wishes to part take ( and may I add for a very small amount of money which is amazing of how they consistantly can do and do bloody well) and very seldom do they Helga and the girls ever get a mention of thanks, To me this is the epitomy of selflessness and generousity.

In times of austerity perhaps more events organisers should provide refreshments even if only an evening bbq, this last year I have attended events throughout the Island of Ireland and at each my meals have been paid for and my mileage costs paid for along with hotel accommodation costs, however what I do now is more with the decade of centennaries and the interest from the public is more than in tune with our own specialist field.

Paul, you are talking about looking after the volunters that are required to run an event. Andy is talking about the participants that attend an event. Two different sets of people.

On that subject though, there are a lot of people who attend events in different sectors of interest, and they dont get reimbursed with food and drink. Infact some events charge said participants to enter
If a person has an interest, they can either decide to keep it to themselves or to show it to the public. If they decide to show it to the public, why should they be expected to be reimbursed for their effort.
Pick any event be it sporting, motorracing or any sort of hobby, do the entriants get reembursed to attend? No they dont, they enter because they want to.
I have noticed that reenactors do believe that they should be reimbusred for their appearance. I know of reenactors that have demanded yes demanded that they should have their transport costs reimbursed.
