Post by Lochner »

specifically the ring mount for top of the cab of a lorry. Got a funny feeling these are as rare as hens teeth - never seen one for sale apart from the post war ones, can anyone help?

The Germans weren't noted for mounting MGs on top of lorry cabs, hence them being rare!

If you really want to do it, have a look around for a Czech one off a Praga.

OK Dave thanks - my lorry has the hatch in the roof and I think one was originally attached.

Could have been used post war.

I'd have a look for some pictures to support the notion of a turret ring. I've had a quick look through my books and photo archives, and I can't find any wartime ones (plenty of post war with the Czechs!).

The V8-51 was produces with a soft top cab, and they also used the einheitsfahrerhaus on some of the V3000 vehicles as well, so the cab could have been cannibalised from another vehicle at some point.

Is the turret a round aperature, or square?

Dave.

Thanks Dave thats interesting - the opening is a square push up type lid - (no hinges).

can you recommend any good reference books even on the post war Czech trucks - I have some wartime reference books (e.g Ford at War) but would be very interested to see some pictures of the Ford V3000S trucks in post war service.

Nothing leaps to mind immediately for post war vehicles - you may find something on here: http://www.autogallery.org.ru/

The square panel is a bit of an odd one. When you look at photos of wartime trucks (not just Ford), you'll see that on top of the cab there is usually a panel welded in. This is basically how they made them, however in some examples the panel is clearly made of 2 sections. I've never seen one with the panel removed, but there is nothing to say that some genius didn't go about removing it to create some sort of sun roof! On the other hand it could be a post war conversion.

Does it look like it was made to be removed? Are there any signs of fixings? This is a Danish addition to my Mercedes:

yes it defin looks like it was made to be removed - pushed upwards - as it has a 1 inch lip around it on the roof side of the opening - I havent removed it yet and it doesnt appear to be welded in just stuck tight with paint. Cleaning at the interior of the cab I have uncovered much of the original wartime sand paint colour with German vehicle cold start instructions etc - the panel in the roof has the same original wartime paint which makes me assume it was a wartime addition.

thanks
