me quaint little renault.

Post by les hearn »

well
just thought i would tell ya what i have been up to today.

after staggering out of bed at around 12 i decided it is time i start on the renault.
many of you dont know that it packed up in november.
engine decided it had had enough .

so after purchasing another renault of the same age i decided to swap the engine over for this years shows and battles.
after ariving at my workshop i made myself a coffee and sat down and had a look at what i was taking on .
time to start, new engine came out the old vehicle easily .took around half an hour due to the fact that there was not much bodywork to take off the old renault .
after setting down on the cold concrete floor i had a look at the condition of the engine.......great news tis good.

now over to the truck.
where do i start i thought to myself
double bonnet......off ok
radiator.........off ok
footwells............ out ok
now i can get to the gearbox .....all bolts .out ok.
engine mounts ....all off ok .
after taking off the anciliarys i was ready to hoist out the old timer.

horror ..................engine mount broken and unrepairable.
now this is not no ordinary engine mount .have to add to my shopping list.
well engine is now on the bench ready for stripping and donated parts off to my new lump.
..

more to come in the next few days on the progress of the truck.

disaster
the new engine has become a bit of a pain
the engine mounts are totally diferent
and to make the engine fit my truck i need to change em
this means taking off the timing cover and timing coggs
now these coggs are made of vinyl
so i have to make a decision on wether to brake the cogg or just make new engine mounts .

second option has been chosen
as i cannot find it in my heart to break the cogg.

tis the same engine.
the only thing diferent is the engine mounts .
thanks anyway

trouble is my truck is literally a coachbuilt vehicle.
not the same as the car version that came out of the factory

chasis is different
so they have changed the mounts
all i need to do is make up two difernet mounting blocks out of a modern car
but as they are right at the front they wont be noticed
shame tho as i wanted to keep it exactly "stock"

engine in now
just awaiting a new machine made part for the distributor to fit in the new head.

i will be fitting a land rover dizzy in as it is an exact fit
so this may cut down on spark loss.
with a bit of luck it will be out at swynners

sorry peeps no pics .

reason being i just wanted to get on with it .
and honestly did not think any one would be interested .

i will take some tommorow
as i have got more update news now and i will be on it tommorow.

had to return to engineers workshop today as the carb needed some machining to the top plate to level it out .
this top plate has a tendancy to "bow" where there is only two bolts holding it down
so it just needed flattening .
need to fabricate a new blanking bolt for the fuel pipe.
when done will fit tommorow

getting a bit peeeeed off now

engine in luvly

went to start her up and now i have a starter problem
after reconditioning the second of my "motors" i fitted it on the engine.
now she turns over nicely .
problem now is no fuel
carbs not allowing fuel through

it has gone from one extreme to the other
at first it was just flooding up the engine now i have no fuel.

i am seriousely thinking of fitting a "ford" lump to the damn thing.

fitted the origional tank today and it was totally blocked.
i attempted to pass 100psi of air pressure through the pipe but this had no affect
with over sixty years of crud in the internal filter it was not budging
i had to cap the outlet pipe off and tap in another pipe on the top
after fitting she is now ready for a test drive.

test drive over had her running up and down the lane for over an hour and on tick over for around ten minutes.
seems ok .
so she will definately beo out to play at swynners.
