Fuel can perversions....

Post by Paulkd »

I love fuel cans!

Here are mine, and one was a real lucky find (the best way to get stuff)

Image

Nice standard 40 can, nice paint, This came from a junk shop in Austria along with a breadbag for 15euro the pair.

Image

Standard 44 can, crap model paint, ignore that! I'll get some proper paint this year promise!

But my real star is this, ive squirted some WD40 over it show show the markings.

I went to a scrapyard in Byfleet Surrey (2003) to get electrical bits for my 65 Sunbeam Alpine, I just stood in the yard chatting to the bloke and just glanced at the fuel can he had been carrying and had put down to talk to me, and this is what i saw, no paint at all but the runes leapt out at me!!!! I was almost shaking with nerves as I asked if I could have a look at his fuel can, Sandrik, yup, then i looked inside to check the little pipe, yup all good! So I asked If i could buy the can, the guy must have thought I was bonkers, but a deal is a deal and he sold me the can (for 10quid)+ the fuel on the spot!!!!

Line up!

Lastly here is a nice little10l can, used for the GG400 generator sets in radio trucks and the like. It makes a great little can for my bike, I hav'nt put any fuel in it yet because it smell very strongly of the synthetic fuel that was in use at the wars end.

Anyone KNOW if the Germans carried premixed 2-stroke and if so what markings the can would have to denote this?

Or was it just neat benzine and add your own 2-stroke oil in your tank.

Nice to see that Heimdal has a picture of the first type of can on the front page. I have at least two of them and a water can somewhere :)

and they cut out the centres and weld the runes in as well!

Mine is real tho, read how I got it, if you open up the can look at the little pipe, the fakes are square.

My book arrives in the post tomorrow (Monday) I'm exited!

My book of can porn arrived today, its great fancy the French having cans for wine!!!!!!

Anyway I learned my ABP can is Ambi Bud Presswerk, the same firm (US owned BTW) who made the Kubel bodies.

The rhs code on my 44 can refers to rheinmetal-borsig, also my SS can is a nice example of the type, it has no paint on it so i will repaint it to match my bike.

Shame my 10l can is not featured in the book, I have seen pictures of them in stowage of radio trucks with the gg400 generator sets, I must dig that pic out!

I had a US can on my jeep, i always thought it was a stupid design with its screw top and the seam around the bottom seems designed to rust out! The German clam shell design means that it will resist the damp ground much better!

2 stroke cans in the carrying rack in the trailer - they have the blue/yellow stripe. These contain a 1:35 oil:petrol mix for the generators.

The marking was present on the original can, these have been restored.

The container at the left is kerosene for lanterns.

Superb! Your gen sets work and are origional?

I have a couple of generators, but I have never tried to start them, I'll pull them out of the shed and see what you think.

BTW did you see the round fuel cans that fitted together into a drop cannister? Dave Hucklbridge had a set at Horndean.

We have 2 original and operational. Both are used to power our displays, as the battery consumption was getting silly for the radios etc!

This is my C100 (configured for the 100WS radio, and X ray equipment). This will eventually be installed in my kfz62 funkwagen with a 100WS/KwEa radio configuration.

This is a post war modified set (puts out useful voltages!):

This one came complete:

This generator is a version of the early war KL100 designed by Auto-Union (now Audi) and DKW. The Swiss army acquired this particular one during, or shortly after World War II. Then, at some point, soon afterwards it was overhauled and partially modified by the Swiss-Swedish company Brown-Boveri (whose data plates can be seen on certain parts).

The motor, dynamo, ignition assembly and many other parts still bear the four interlinked circle logo of Auto-Union (now associated with Audi). The fuel filter under the petrol tank has a DRP number indicating wartime era construction. Similar markings are also to be found on the carburetor. The original generator had an output of 210 volts at 600 watts; the new system is similar, but also has the facility for outputs of 12 and 24 volts. The original pull strap type starter has been upgraded, in this later model, to a rotating starting handle (used for cold/arctic conditions as the pull straps were prone to freezing solid). All in all, the generator seems to be a slightly later version of the one shown in the manual with some additional tweaks by Brown-Boveri.

The original, German, example would originally have been cased in a wooden box with power output from a small power takeoff board underneath the petrol tank. The Swiss rebuild, resulted in a slightly larger generator being fitted along with a new power takeoff board; the entire assembly was then mounted in a metal frame with a loose canvas cover

Also with the Generator is the complete tool and spare parts set, contained in the three original parts tins that would have been mounted in the original wooden case. All of these parts (including tins and containers) are marked "Auto-Union", "DKW of Zschopau" or with the interlocked circle logo and everything has a part number.
