Aircraft attack, aircraft shot down:American Avenger (VC-1 USN, pilot Lt(jg) A.H. Sallenger)

In the morning U-262 was awaiting refuelling from U-664 while U-760 was being supplied in bad weather. At 10.11 hours, an Avenger/Wildcat team from USS Card located the boats and attacked U-262. The Wildcat strafed her while the Avenger tried to attack with depth charges, but an AA hit in the bomb bay caused the ordnance to hung up and put the radio out of commission. Making a second run, the Avenger was hit again by AA fire and a fuel tank in the starboard wing caught fire. The two manually dropped depth charges severely damaged U-262, but the pilot had to jettison the Fido homing torpedo and ditched the burning aircraft. The radioman went down with the Avenger, while the pilot and the gunner were picked up in the afternoon by USS Barry after being spotted by other aircraft from the escort carrier. The Wildcat was also shot down by the boat during another strafing run and crashed into the sea, killing its pilot. U-262 had to abort her patrol due to the damages. (Sources: Franks/Zimmerman)

The gas bottle to launch and set "Aphrodite" balloons and arrays , the enhanced machine gun set up on the bridge to support ( such as they could) the twin 20mm ( and probably quad 20mm) on the upper and lower bandstands.
The 7x50 on the man to the right of the Captain (probably Kl. Heinz Franke), rubber bumpers and that exceedingly rare rubber jacket.

The Olympic rings...... a really good photo Cam.

262 pressed home an attack on USS "Card" , but they atatcked and missed her escorting destroyer USS Borie. ( K Wynn - "Career Histories Vol. 1").
Megaphone seems to be a standard piece of equipment for a skipper docking his craft . :)#
Small Rk on the jack.

The small carriers certainly took a heavy toll on U Boats "just when you thought it was safe to get back in the water".

U260.
From Jak Showell's "The Enigma Boats" ( Ian Allen 2000).
Showell in his text mentions that just before the end of the war U-260's enigma machine and some of her code books were recovered by a fisherman near the Fastnet Rock.
Boats were at this time issued with lead lined sacks in which to sink confidential material, either they did not have them or could not access them - either way they failed to observe them sinking.
The heavy brace for the schnorkel , the extra armour on the side of the bridge, the twin 20,, x 2 , on the lower band stand most likely a 3.75mm gun and the attack periscope partly up.
By 45 the VIIC was well out of date and was not the most stable gun platform heavily overloaded.
The 3.75 was judged to be the best AA gun they could have but it was prone to jamming, it could make a big hole in any aircraft as long as it could keep firing although any boat caught by aircraft was unlikely to get away.

Hi Tychsen , yes it is true that some of U 260 codes books were picked up by fishermen and handed over to the police ( Garda) in Southern Ireland . I have copies of there books which I was allowed to copy by the Authorities , also found was the Soldbuch of the CO Klaus Becker . This material is very interesting .

Yes, I have always wondered what Military Archives have on "260". Seeing copies would certainly be interesting. :)
There is a guy who runs a shop in Belfast a well known teller of tall tales who told me years ago how he had found a U Boat off the South Coast of Ireland and how he had dived on the boat recovered everything and sold it in his shop , after each dive he booby trapped the hatch .
( Very fecking likely !!!)
He told me how the crew had scuttled their boat and came ashore in rubber rafts to surrender rather than surrender to the Allies.... he was probably making it up around U260 but as we say " he took nothing away in the telling" !!

Last time I was in his shop he tried to see me a "special issue set of Zeppelin Binoculars" for £160, in reality a set of NCO issue WW1 binoculars price £15-20.

Some good U Boat photos here, also one of U260 in which she seems to have returned with some damage to her tower.
