Atlantikwall - Kernwerk IJmuiden

Atlantikwall at Forteiland IJmuiden. The original Dutch army fortress (built on a small artificial island in 1876) was used to block the enemy from attacking Amsterdam trough the Northseechannel. In WW2 the Germans turned the large harbor of IJmuiden in a keypoint for the Kriegsmarine. Many bunkers from that period are still in that area (notably the huge Schnellboat bunker) IJmuiden would be converted to a Festung with the old fortress as its 'Kernwerk'. A Kernwerk was the centre of a Festung and would be used as a last resort in case of a defensive battle.

The aged fortress wasn't interesting for the German army, so they build a total of 36 large and small bunkers on this small island in order to support a full battery + the MG/mortar/PAK bunkers that would be used to defend the island in case of a invasion, manned by around 120 men (KM coastal artillery+WH festungsstammtruppen). After the war about 2/3rd of the island was demolished to make some more space as the harbor was and is still in full use.

Some nice photos.

The attempts at re-creating 'old' colour images are good. I know how difficult it is to get convincing effects with modern colour film. Have you seen this?
