I agree It's a combination of the camera, the lens and the film stock, all of which is a world away from the digital photography we use today. Here is my attempt. I faked up a more shallow depth of field, fannied around with brightness / contrast and added a neg fault.

Faking up 1940s colour process from digital is even harder. I've only ever had halfway decent results by shooting on film. This one way shot in colour using a 1950s camera at Detling a few years ago

I would have to agree with you on the colour stuff. That starts to get really complicated and I've only managed to pull that off a couple of times messing with colour saturation and balance.

I flirted with the hand tinted look on black and white last year which gave some pleasing results and was alot easier to do.

The colour saturation on Mollers larger photo looks great. It seems really difficult to get modern colour looking like war time prints.

As to trying to get the photos looking old. It depends on if you are trying for authentic 1940's prints when the photo was new or one that looks like it was taken 70 years ago.
Be a pessimist and never be disappointed.

This one is from Waltham this weekend (Yes I know its a yank) Canon 500D with a 50mm 1:8, low light just before dusk. This is very slightly photoshoped, contrast etc but I like it.

I love this picture. Everything about it is right.

If I were nitpicking I'd maybe question the stripes on the ball as I think this is a '60s thing, but quite prepared to be proved wrong :D
