Luftwaffe Great Coat question

Post by VonSchnitzel »

Hi guys

I have just brought a Luftwaffe Great Coat From Barry on Ebay for my Luftwaffe field Divison impression

http://www.ebay.com/itm/400287688192?ss ... 1439.l2649

I was wondering if collar tabs actually go on them as I wouldn't go off a ebay picture lol.
Im pretty sure shoulder broads do so any feed back on what actually goes on the great coat would be appreciated.

I'll have a look through Goring's Grenadiers as I think there are some pictures of FD troops in Greatcoats in Russia circa winter 42-43. I think (don't quote me on this yet) that they don't have collar tabs attached, only shoulder boards.

there is a directive (can find it at the moment) where all HG were told to remove collar tabs (white) as they could and were being used as sniper target practice. Agreed Goering's Gren' is a MUST read.

Yes, I have heard that about the HG division removing their collar tabs as the white was a target. I don't believe the Field Division were subject to this as their collar tabs were green.

Look through Goring's Grenadiers and through the photos I have on my PC, the photos of FD troops with greatcoats all seem to not have collar tabs on. So I would generally say unless proven otherwise by photographic evidence, don't put any collar tabs on your greatcoat. Personally when I do FD, I don't have collar tabs on my greatcoat, only on my tunic and just have shoulder boards on mine.

In May 1942 an order was given to remove the collar tabs until the 1st Oct. 1942. officers until the 1st april 1943. The Wachregiement and Führer-Flakabteilung were excluded from this order.

I have to agree. The most common look is with no collar tabs. If you read the convoluted collar tab system around mid 1943 for field divisions, your head will be spinning. Pretty much by 1943 no collar tabs were worn by OR's. Field Division units would not be wearing green ones on their mantels. However, transferred personnel from other units (flieger, flak, etc) might have them still on their greatcoats till the order was enforced.
My Field Division unit does not authorize collar tabs on greatcoats. We also give the member a choice whether to wear collar tabs on their fliegerbluse or pin the gulls directly through the collar. We prefer a more late 43-44 impression.
