Forgotten Voices of Burma

Post by Gott Mit Uns »

Just started reading this book and was compelled to do so after I met a Burma artillery veteran at a dinner night. Its one of a series of books which takes first hand accounts and places them into the history of the eb and flow of fighting campaigns.

Well worth the read, its amasing to hear how similar the confusion was during the British retreat in Burma, alongside the German retreats of the Eastern front. Add to that a lack of supplies, equipment and ammunition, you start to build up a similar picture. I couldnt believe that some of these men spent weeks and even months without adequate clothing or shoes - other than maybe a pair of shorts or some sandals. Whilst other units were given a pistol each and a magazine, and 1 rifle between thirty. This book really brings home just how forgotten these men really were, for four years - until 1944 when the War Office was able to send adequate reinforcements.
