There is nothing wrong with the ATF boots, thaey are hard wearing. They are made in the same place as the sturm ones but they are different, thicker leather more robust! Detlef is the Schuhemeister and knows his shit! He makes great FJ Y straps by the way!

That would be the other way around compared to their lowboots and jackboots, which are worse quality then the sturm ones.

I don't think that first boot is original, as you say it looks like a Zeug boot when it arrives before it's dye.

the rubber soles should be completely rubber and not stuck on the bottom ?

anychance of having any pics of the shoe being done up , possibly on someones foot ?

trying to determine if the width of the ankle is massive like the 1st pattern SMW boots. If its an improvement and is tight around the ankle, then i can see myself buying a pair

Here you can see the tight fit aroud the ankle, not like the wide short shaft of other reproductions.

Hope this pictures of a pair of originals will convince you also about the pebbled leather.
NOTE: The rubber heel plate on this originals is nearly gone .
The (higher) heel on our reproductions was made on special specifications of one of our costumers.... to make him taller ... I think
normally we fix the rubber heel directly on the leather sole.

Now, it can be argued that over time the pebbled lost its 'pebbled'ness' (bad english) , but
a lot of the boots in collectors hands out there have been kept in reasonable to mint condition
so they are in a state as they were from the 1940's. And most i have seen are smooth..
so i dont know about that guys opinion. Im no expert, havent handled an original pair,
just going by what i have read and seen pictures from original collections .

and turn into a smoother look The same effect you can also see on some pebbled
leather k98 original ammo puches and other stuff.
The Germans have used nearly all sorts of leather or materials for boots and equipment,
so it is quite possible that sometimes also smooth leather was used for the side lacers.
Nobody of us can know it exactly... it is history... and history is gone.
