The biggest departure from an M-43 remains the double-seam crown attachment
Any close-ups ?

You have some fantastic photos, Mr. FtrPlt :)

I probably have some high-resolution images at home. Unfortunately I won't be home to look for them for a few more weeks.

I don't think the actual composition of the stiffener is an issue. You can use pretty much anything. It's use does dramatically change to look of the cap by preventing the front peak from sagging and also allowing the 'pinch' to retain its shape.

Questions I still have are whether or not the early (pre-1940) Bergmützen used leather under the fabric of the visor? Original caps that I've handled have visors that feel distinctly different that visors on M43 caps (which I think were some type of cardboard)

Gruss di Jungen,

Not strictly WW2 related but:

How do WW1 Skijaeger Muetzen compare with those issued by the WH? If I bought a repro WH one and changed the insignia, would that work or is the design too different? Without having an original to work from its a bit difficult knowing the differences.Do you know if anyone repros the WW1 version? I thank you for comments.

Greetings gents:
Sorry to report that my intended collaboration with Lost Battalions is apparently suspended. I've not heard anything in months and, due to my business travels, have not been as diligent as I would have liked in pushing the project forward. For whatever reason, I've not heard back from anyone at LB for quite some time. Lots of rumours about the state of the company but I have no firsthand information.

I did have another custom cap made using doeskin this time. Still has the M-43 style crown seam though.

My latest Bergmütze. Still not perfect but getting closer.

Feldgrau doeskin with steinuß buttons. I added the front stiffener using original photos and dimensions provided by Patrick. I still need to add the leather sweatband.

Faults: still not using the correct stitching to attach the top of the cap and the front part of the scallop still isn't rounded.

Last photo shows this latest cap (on right) against the LB cap I purchased last summer.

Hello to all,
I am a newer member of this forum, and just starting to complete GJ uniforms.

No one before never mention Spearhead Militaria (http://stores.ebay.com/Spearhead-Militaria)...
...and their bergmutze:

Is this a solid reproduction for the money?

I have heard of him, but I haven't bought anything from him.
But I do have experience with the seller "hiki1620" on ebay.
He is correct and Bergmütze is well made with regards to the price.

The Bermütze can be found with no vents, one vent on each side, or two vents on each side, depending on when they were produced. This information is applicable to contract-produced caps -- ie. the types issued to enlisted soldaten.

Until ~1939, the depot/contract caps do not have vents
~1939-41, they have one vent on each side
1942: Munich depot caps (I have photos of just 3 of these) have two vents on each side.

I don't know if there were any contract-produced caps after 1942. Probably unlikely as the M43 cap was being introduced in late 1942.

Most Officer Gabardine caps hat 2 vents even early war. But these were made privatly for officers as was most of their clothing items when money was to be had.

Can you post some photos? I have a few decent reference books but nearly all of the photos in my books show officer caps with no vents or just the single vents.
