Suitable Camouflage Smock for an HG Division Impression?
Hi all,
I've been loaned an early pattern (M38 or M40, not sure which) W-SS smock by a mate. I'm wondering if it would be ok for use in a HG Div impression. I don't know who made it, or where it came from, but I would imagine that it's a Chinese copy. I realise that it's probably not the best smock out there, but I'd like to know if you all think if it would be acceptable to be used at an event. You can be as brutally honest as you like
Pictures are attached. Cheers !

Nope... the HG division didn't use these smocks.
Have a look at this topic, found a lot of original photo's and posted them over here: viewtopic.php?f=9&t=16377
Rauchtarn would be the most common and they were issued in the Italy campaign. So if that's the scenario, a Rauchtarn would fit the best.
On the Eastern front they wore the Plane tree smock.

Hi, thanks for the info. I did look at the post you mentioned, but wasn't looking closely enough. Now I can see Rauchtarn and plane tree in those photos. One might even have palm tree, but I'm no expert by any means.
So oakleaf is no good then - it was worth a try I guess
Cheers!

Most of the HG smocks were primarily Plane tree with Palmenmuster a close second! type one and type two are seen all the way to East Prussia 45.

But for the later period, a splinter B field division jacket would be best.

Late period will accept also sumpf smock.

No, it will not. Please provide photographic evidence for this claim. Unless you are talking about the sumpf Heer sniper smock?Stadler wrote:Late period will accept also sumpf smock.

But try to put down a whole unit in 1 kind of camouflage IF it's realy needed.
So not one guy a tarnjacke, one guy a Sumpf Smock and one with a Rauchtarn Smock...
If they got something handed out, they all got the same kind of clothing.

Well said. In most cases everyone in the unit should have the same type of camoflage clothing, rather than a pick and mix.CDB Schmidt wrote:But try to put down a whole unit in 1 kind of camouflage IF it's realy needed.

You mean the same cut? All pull over smocks or all field jackets rather than all the same pattern of camo?Olly wrote: the unit should have the same type of camoflage clothing,
Re: Suitable Camouflage Smock for an HG Division Impression?
Yes for the most part, as if a truck has turned up and dished it all out. Camouflage being the same pattern varies on the item of clothing and depending on the stage of the war. I don't recall any pictures of both type of army smock being used at once for example, but Fallschirmjager late '44 seem to have used both paterns is some units.
As for a unit example - Sumph smocks & splinter helmet covers, Panzer grenadier Regt 192. 21st Pz Div June '44. Vast majority of them have both in the June photos, but by July/Aug many have worn out and presumably some replacements arrived with out them.
Although regarding HG they obviously had a variety issued at different times and places during the war, I'm sure there are many with more knowledge specific to this particular unit than I. There must be a break down of periods and locations where certain items were most common.
Obviously Officers and NCOs occasionally had their own items made/held on to older items. I'm sure some men did as well if they could get away with it.
The issue of all these items always seems to cause a bit of controversy!
I believe these men are reputed to be HG also? -
