I have read that the Luftwaffe Gefreiter and higher sleeve rank was changed in 1942 from silver to a subdued copper/brown lace.
I never have seen any for sale on original militaria sites, don't think I have seen any on reenactors arms, and so, I am embarrassed to say, I can't find any info on it.

Did they subdue their rank in 42 (or any year!)

The Luftwaffe did produce subdued chevrons after September of '42, following the example of the Heer. They never achieved overall success. My search online a few results and mostly originals.
