Use of Anorak by Fallschirmjäger

Post by Pietje »

Does someone know if there are photographs in existance of Fallschirmjäger wearing the Anorak wich was also used by Gebirgsjäger ???

Visited yesterday a display at a museum about Fallschirmjäger uniforms and one of the mannequins was dressed with a anorak. Was wondering if they were used by Fsj...

It's a German Mountain Troops 3 pocket jacket.

I have pics of FJ wearing these at Monte Cassino, as well as GJ mountain boots.

Grüß Di' Bergkameraden,

Both Gebirgsjägers and Fallschrimjägers fought together in several battles during WWII...especially in Italy. In the Monte Cassino area, both the 5th Gebirgsdivision and Hochgebirgsjäger Btl. 4 fought alongside the Fallschirmjägers. Getting the required supplies for troops in this theater was tough. That's why you see such a variety of troops wearing a large range of clothing. Not uncommon to see Heer troops wearing Luftwaffe items and visa versa...as well as a mixture of tropical and continental clothing items...with Italian items mixed in too.

Horrido!

FJ were issued wind anoraks and mountain boots(check out some pics in Narvik) if the terrain demanded. Cassino onwards sees a lot of FJ wearing them(as I do myself!)

Dagda, you'll probably find that the Narvik pics are actually of members of Gebirgsjäger Regt 137 who jumped into the place. They wore standard Heer tunics, FJ trousers and gebirgs boots with the bergmutze and FJ helm and jump smocks.

Thats no to say that the FJ there may have gotten hold of a pair and I am happy to be corrected, but thats what I have seen thus far.

Dagda, I'd love to see those pics if you can scan them. I find the whole campaign pretty fascinating in total from both a Gebirgs and FJ perspective. A real tight knit working relationship.

Wasn't there a FJ unit who used the edelweiss as an affection badge on the side of their caps as a memento of their Narvik/ Norway experinces? Or am I just dreaming that?

I think the Fj in Narvik used the GJ wind jacket (larger double buttoned front), but there are pictures of FJ in Italy wearing the wind anorak as per the photo at the begining of this thread, I will dig out some period pictures.

Servus lads :D , great thread, as a member of a Gebirgs reenact group ive done a bit of research too. It seems the Gebirgs when landing in Crete in 41 were issued FJ helmets as some pictures ive seen show this, however after landing were soon discarded as the Jagers preferred their Bergmutze's 8) (obviously). So it looks like your manequin is a GJ not FJ, or the images taken and copied to reproduce the display were of Jagers as it seems unlikely that the Falschirm would wear the mountaineer's smock, however i have seen photos of Jagers wearing the splinter FJ ground troops jacket so perhaps anything was possible. regards Peiper.[quote] "I'll show you where the hot cross buns are made!"
