Re: Zeltbahn or smock?

If you are portraying a Grenadier from 914 GR then it is almost certain you would not have had a smock. The 352ID (later VGD) was a bog-standard infantry unit where the default camo option was a zeltbahn. Secondly, in my (limited) experience, there is no-one making 'spot-on' repro smocks. There may ...

Re: German Army 1933-45 Politicised to what extent?

Hi viktor, What a very interesting essay you will have to write.......... :-) If you are not aware of these books, try these as a foundation: The German Army and the Nazi Party.1933-1939. Robert J. O'Neill. Hitler's Army. Soldiers, Nazis, and the war in the Third Reich. Omer Bartov. The eastern Fron...

I'm guessing these are Danish resistance fighters circa 1945.

Re: Grossdeutschland '42-'43

I remember Hed Gerbener telling us he would have his men mix up their winter cammo uniforms so it would break up their images better then wearing both top and bottom the same way.
And there's no arguing with that............................Herr Gerbener was a battalion CO in the Pzr-Gren-Rgt-GD.

Re: stg44 used in Normandy?

Agreed. Maybe the gentleman thinks that Kurtz means 'lacquered steel' rather than 'short'??

Re: Grossdeutschland '42-'43

Thank you for posting. This photo has appeared in a couple of GD books and does appear to be an authenticated photo of GD troops. All wear the winter padded suits, although it is not clear if the chaps centre and right are wearing 'white side out' splitter trousers or have the 'mouse grey' trousers....

Re: stg44 used in Normandy?

What other German weapons used the 7.9mm Kurtz rounds?? I thought such ammo was specifically designed for the assault rifles?

Re: Superb colour footage from Tuisia

Very very interesting.....particularly liked the part towards the end where the German combat veterans, with their chestful of medals and campaign armshields, gather for the cameraman.......wonder how long they kept hold of them before the US MPs showed an interest??????

Re: 3rd Kp, 1st Panzergrenadier Regt. 1st SS Panzer Division.

Tom is quite correct. Many armoured divisions (SS or otherwise) regarded themselves as 'fire brigades' becuase they were shunted around stamping out one 'flare up' after another mostly at the whim of Hitler pointing his finger on a map. GD in particular were more specific in their adopted nickname, ...

Re: Grossdeutschland '42-'43

Many thanks again! Of the photos you post: The first was taken in Romania in May/June 1944 and shows a Leutnant, possibly from one of the Grenadier Battalions. A rare case of a GD man wearing an issue 'splitter' helmet cover. The second is from a series of shots/film footage that I think is of the G...

Re: Grossdeutschland '42-'43

Thank you for taking the time to reply. I am not familiar with the first book you mention so will have to try and get a copy........however, the second book you talk of is not good for GD reference.....most of the photos contained within it have nothing to do with GD and the accompanying information...
