Re: another helmet
When restored this will look great. Strip all the old paint and paint it correctly.

Re: (Heer) Helmet colour scheme and timeline
That's the normal iron oxide-mixed paint. The early 1940 pattern field grey helmets were smooth.

Re: M17 Stahlhelm?
M43 caps, no. Not issued until Stalingrad was well over.
M1917/18 helmets, definitely yes! Seen on photographs, video footage and also ground dug in the stalingrad area.

They start showing up mid 1941. Until then, stick to belt hooks. Afterwards, Y-straps all the way.

Re: (Heer) Helmet colour scheme and timeline

Re: (Heer) Helmet colour scheme and timeline
I'm getting the feeling that the dark ones are just aged ral 6006. I have seen well abused helmets that I have painted nearly 10 years ago in that color and they are slowly turning darker and darker depending on use.

Re: Splinter uniforms - how common, how often?
Hey, you copied my post! I have never seen a sniper in a camo tunic. Field made smocks were quite common. There was only one standard issue sniper smock and that was the hooded sumpftarn smock. Any issue of splinter smocks (which were quite rare anyway!) would have been at the local CO's discretion....

This looks excellent, I'd go with this and just be very careful not to ruin the uniform.
