Re: watertight gas can?
You can find the ring in postwar cans. Repro's I've never seen but I would not be surprised if Vit Zemanek makes them. Peiper, the dust cover is just as Nathan says it is. Not meant to be removed. I've seen original boxes without them too. next to that these filters came with 2 lids, one on the top ...

Re: watertight gas can?
Why should masks with a D be specificly designed for KM? Name a type of unit in need of watertight gasmask canisters in the KM. Divers? Oh wait.
Sorry, but the D is just a '42 on difference in manufacture.

Re: watertight gas can?
Doing a quick lookup on WAF when I bought the frn42 can I've read that all of the cans with the D marking originally had a rubber ring in them but it was later ordered to be removed for recycling or later discontinued to save rubber. Why say that the "D" marked cans are meant for KM only w...

Re: watertight gas can?
I've never seen one stamped "DW". I believe it was originally invented to cope with the moist and dust deteriorating the mask and it's filter after experiences in the Russian steppes and the Afrika Korps. The earliest Can that I have with the D is from 1942. Oh, and I have seen someone go ...

Re: what would be the side arm of a mg34 /42 gunner
Schutze 1 and 2 carry a pistol, schutze 3 carries ammo and a rifle.
All sorts of weapons where issued. Most likely the P38. On second place come the P08 and P35(b) which I prefer most of my guns. A 14 round magazine is a good bet when you're having close encounters with others...

Re: watertight gas can?
Nope. The D stands for "Dicht". Wich means sealed or closed. Not for keeping water out, but a seal against dust.peiper1944 wrote:They are for Kriegsmarine/Coastal Artillery troops

If you suggest that Pre 1945 there was only "single" twist chickenwire, you are wrong. Back in 1901, 2 patterns where patented in the Netherlands, a double and a double twist.
So, either would be accurate. But why so rusty?

Re: Low Boots repair
My thoughts on nails instead of wooden pegs. Wooden pegs were used on originals, so that's a good reason for a start. My actual thought is leather and wooden pegged soles will expand and contract together, keeping everything tight. If one uses nails, the leather will expand when in dryer conditions...

Re: Low Boots repair
I had the same problem with one of my Berger Schnurschuhe some while ago. But what do you want after 5 years of carnage. They still serve me well. 1. Remove the rest of the half sole completely by pulling. 2. Clean the main and the half sole with turpentine. 3. http://www.elektronica-shop.nl/content...

Kampf um Clervaux: Unternehmen Herbstnebel
We begin this story at the end of 16th of december 1944. The men of the 304.Pzgr.Rgt. have just been through the first day of the Ardennes offensive and find shelter for the night inside a old Abbey in Marnach, Luxembourg. Losses where plenty, ammo is low. The morale isn't high amongst all of the tr...
