David Mearns book signing for new book on HMAS Sydney

Post by West-Front »

My father and I attended a local book signing and lunch with David Mearns. He and his team successfully found the wrecks of the HMAS Sydney and the German raider Kormoran off the coast of Western Australia in 2008.

A very poignant moment was when an elderley woman who had a relative lost on the HMAS Sydney showed us a period print (obviously well loved and valued)

I can highly recommend the book as its well produced and illustrated and getting a copy signed was a fantastic opportunity. Here are some photos and links associated with the HMAS Sydney

Glad you had a good morning / afternoon Cam - an event I would certainly have attended myself.

David Mearns has resolved a very important piece of Australian and German naval history he has rendered a national service to Australia.
(He certainly did much the same for the UK when he located the wreck of HMS Hood).

This might at first glance sound a little OTT but it is really not ,for years the fate of the ship has been the subject of speculation and rumour and with his teams efforts being successful in finally locating her one of the outstanding losses from WW2 has been explained and the site of a war grave marked.

Perhaps in the years to come further lost ships and craft will be located and identified , we have seen in recent years Innes Maccarthy identifying several lost U-Boats from WW1 and WW2 which were sunk in and around the British / Irish Coast , including positive identification of several unknown submarines sunk as part of "Operation Deadlight".

From your photos Cam it is evident that your history is important to you and in being there you shared this with the relatives of HMAS Sydney's lost crew.

Post up the details of the book Cam along with the cover , this is one I will look for - as far as I am aware it has not hit these shores yet.
( Although I see one or two copies being sold on Amazon for an insane amount of money.)

As you rightly point out Cam the two ships are forever linked and various rumours which filled the vacuum have now largely been dispelled.
DM in his book makes a point of remembering the men lost from both Sydney and Kormoran , hopefully he will write about the search for the HSK in due course.
I will see if a copy can be has at a sensible price in the UK - first look say 55 sterling which is a little mad !
