Repro stuff to fit a modern sized guy?

Post by Freebooter »

Hello all,
I was looking at the tabis and lowboots at Stewart's and they only go up to like a size 9 or 10. Anyway, I would love to get some of those boots (German repros are similar) and believe it or not would love some tabis, but can't find my size (12 1/2 to 13 in U.S. inche sizes). I can never find any uniforms to fit me either. Does anyone know where I can find some of those rubberized looking tabis in large sizes?
Thanks,
Dave

Reproduction Japanese boots and tabis only seem to come in the smaller sizes. For the boots the only choice is to have some made but thats not cheap. For the tabis try searching ebay, the Japanese still wear tabis alot and there still made, you may be able to find a modern pair that look similiar to the wartime pattern

Thanks. Also, the German low boots are very, very similar to the Japanese ones, hobnails and all. In the pics of Japanese repro boots at Stewart's they look like they are smooth side out while the German ones are rough side out. Perhaps I could get some German ones and use it for both impressions. I will just say that they got roughed up with use! Ha!
Thanks,
Dave

The Japanese did produce boots with the rough leather facing out, it just happens the repros being made are the smooth leather type, but both were used throughout the war

Thanks Tanaka,
It seems to me then that the German low boots are very similar to Japanese boots. Have you ever noticed that German, Japanese, and Russian Breadbags/Haversacks and Messkits are very similar? Neat ain't it?

Here lately I ordered me a Japanese messkit and breadbag from Stewarts. When I get them I will then have so far a helmet, rifle, bayonet, entire belt rig with pouches and frog, haversack/breadbag, messkit, and canteen. The only things original so far are my weapons. This is kind of a neat hobby and I am excited about putting together a soldier's outfit as a display. If I could find a uniform to fit me I might wear it sometimes, but I will probably dress up a manaquinn for a display. Other than a uniform, all I lack is the entrenching tool and carrier, pack or knapsack, and tenthalf, poles, etc.. I want to do the same with a Russian, German, U.S., and Italian impression eventually.

Freebooter,
Once your kit is complete you can attend the Saipan reenactment in PA held every August.
We could use more IJA.
