Does this mean a lost man has been found? If you do any research on this Erkennungsmark will you let us know the findings please?

Did he survive? Was he killed? Would make all the difference knowing

(un)fortunetly , there was no body  . Dog-tag was found along with the belt , SS buckle , Mauser cleaning toolbox , and a badge for the Ostfront. Probably soldier disarmed himself, burying everything that could indicate the membership of the SS.

Soldier on the right is a french volunteer named Samson. He completed training for non-commissioned officers in Posen-Treskau.

We can proudly boast that our efforts were appreciated by the veteran of 33rd Division "Charlemagne" - Robert S. ( he is 91 years old now ). In a letter he wrote:

"Recently I had the opportunity to see pictures ( reenactment ) of events in which participated me and my companions in Pomerania (...). I care about this fact and therefore i would like to thank you, because I was extremely moved when it hit in my hands. Photographs represent the true picture. I would like to express my appreciation because the images look so that they could successfully provide an illustration of press material issued at the time."

There is nothing more agreeable to our ears.

Nice, very nice portrait too. You don't see many photos of Charlemagne guys so this is quite rare in itself.
