Re-enactment German field rations

Post by syow25 »

What kind of rations did the Germans carrying in their bread bags? DAK?
What would be the modern day version, that you could buy in your local grocery store.
All info wanted.

Thanks

I guess that would depend on where you count as local.
Local in Germany is very different to local in Texas.

Which year ? I suspect the bread bag would be a cornucopia in '39 , compared to '44-45

However - cured sausage , an apple , a piece of cheese , French toast ( like the ready baked stuff issued during the war ) , anything he could scrounge . He could also carry stuff like needle and thread , a tin cup , ...use your imagination . As for DAK , check in the morning for scorpions ..

Most German soldiers were ordered to carry a portion of Iron Rations which
were only consumed in an emergency, they consisted of a portion of bread
fresh or the "Daurbrot-B compound" which was compressed dried bread, then a
portion of meat which was either dried or tinned and a ration of soup which
could either be tinned or the dried soup flakes, this Iron Ration portion was
carried apparantly in all theatres including the ETO and the Tropics.

What else you put in your bread bag was down to the individuals personal need
or requirements, in the Tropics i would imagine that malaria and salt tablets
would be carried, plus dust goggles and the normal tabacco and chocolate
ration for DAK personel, here is a pic of mine showing a basic SS- Grenadier on
the ETO necessities including wash kit, cigarettes, tinned chocolate, butter/fat dish,
dust goggles, spork, sacharine/sugar pkt, Esbit cooker and fuel plus the Iron ration
portion consisting of tinned meat, Daurbrot-B and dried soup flakes.

I picked my bits up a bit at a time,
the shaving brush is modern but
looks the part as they haven't
changed that much, as for the
razor and blades, I got them from
a dealer called "Battleflag Militaria",
although SOF (soldier of fortune)
do some decent repro personal kit,
the other bits are repro packaging
you can pick up from dealers on
ebay, regards ;-)

Servus syow25,

I would suggest the following books if you want to know about German field rations:

All three books are excellent references.

Yes i agree, ref books are a must as i myself just didn't go out and buy
a box full of period looking junk, a lot of time and referance went into
the enterprise before buying anything, once i was armed with the knowledge
of what to look for then i went hunting.

The book (pic below) "Deutsche Soldaten" really helped me, it showed me
what was used, not just issued gear but privately aquirred items too, its
this knowledge you need to find personal items, also i scoured different
vendors and suppliers for what i needed as not everything came from one
source, now iam pleased to say i have aquirred quite a lot of original personal
items and i quite got into the chase for items and enjoyed it, anyway good luck
with your venture ;-)

Would you like a period Scho Ka Kola tim instead of that modern one?

This Mauxion one is probably rarer than the Wehrmacht Packung ones and very collectable:

£60 plus postage

or here is a very clean version of the Hildebrand "hybrid" tins complete with remnants of tape binder, as seen in Rations of the Wehrmacht book

also £60 plus postage.

PM me if interested.
