How were these awards worn ?

Post by Halle »

I have a question about awards , belonging to Sturmbanführer Albert Stenwedel , Kdr.II./ Waffen-Geb-Jg.Regt. der SS27 , 13e Waffen - Gebirgs Division der " Handschar " ( Kroatische Nr. 1 ) .

His awards are listed as follows ; RK , EK1 , EK2 , Kriegsverdienstkreuz mit Schwerten Ie und IIe Klasse , Ost Medal , a Croation Medal " order of the iron trefoil ( class unknown ) , SA Sportsabzeichen , Reitersportsabzeichen , and Reichssportsabzeichen .

My question is , which of these awards would have been worn in the field , and how ? The RK was awarded 3rd May ( along with four others to the Division ) in recognition of the Divisions bravery , so I'm assuming this was never worn " in the field " .

One of the problems I have is there are no existing wartime photos that I know of with him wearing awards , he either has none , is wearing none , or they are obscured in some way if he is wearing any . I am also unsure wether his EKI and II were awarded along with the RK .

Thanks in advance ,

In the book 'There Honour was Loyalty',there is not much information on him apart from the date of his RK and the only photo of him he is wearing an early M37 uniform and no awards at all.The EKII,KVKII,ost medal and I think the croation medal would have been worn in the form of a medal bar,the EKI and sports and riding awards could worn on the tunic,if he chose to do so in the case of the sports awards. The only photo I found on WAF was a post war one at a reunion wearing his 57 patt;RK.John

John , thank you , that's the sort of info I was looking for - the KVK I though , would that have been worn on the left pocket ? I'm sure I've seen pictures of it worn this way .

You are right , not any pictures of him exist , far more post war than during hostilities ...

Horrido !

Yes the KVKI would be worn maybe slightly lower than the EKI as this is to take presidence over all other orders.

With regards to the Croatian Iron trefoil,i found the following information on WAF.
4th class:Black trefoil cross worn from a triangular ribbon on the left breast.
3rd class:similar cross, but worn on a normal ribbon from the second button hole of the tunic.
2nd class:same cross, but worn as pin-back decoration on the left breast pocket.
1st class:same cross, but slightly larger worn on a ribbon at the throat.
I also found a picture of a ribbon bar.

John , excellent information , thank you for your time . The class of the Trefoil is unknown , so ill either look for a decent pin back repro ( if it exists ) , or more likely get it added to the ribbon bar .

Again , many thanks ,

Horrido !

John , once again , thank you . I think this shows perfectly how many of the awards I mentioned in my OP should be worn . The trefoil is indeed huge - I'm assuming this is the pin back second class , with the first class being worn around his neck along with the RK he won while serving with " Prinz Eugen " ?
