The U-Boot-Mutti

Post by Pummelchen »

During WW II the dockyard in Bremen (Weser AG) build 41 U-Boats from December 1942 onwards.
Frau Marie Rosiefsky "adopted" all crew members of those 41 U-Boats and became their caring
"U-Boot-Mutti".

She would listen to all their small and bigger worries, she supplied them with records for their trips,
bought little presents for the men´s brides if asked to, helped in posting letters and even contacted families
to let them know when the U-Boats were leaving or coming home.

Her husband was the chairman of the "Bremer U-Bootkameradschaft" and hence she came in contact
with the officers and men.

Many times she was the last one standing at the Moorlosenkirche, waving the U-Boats good-bye.
That is why she received the name "U-Boot-Mutti" by the crew members.

The U-Boat crews wanted to show their gratitude to Frau Rosiefsky, so each crew presented her with
a little silver U-Boat which she wore on a silver necklace. Each miniature had the name of the
commandant engraved.

By the end of the war, the "U-Boot-Mutti" had 41 U-Boats on her neckglace, as seen on this picture.

Sadly only 6 of the 41 U-Boats saw the end of WW II intact.
