Zundapp KS600 IGN key confusion...

Post by Paulkd »

As everyone knows I use a screwdriver as an ign key...
So I got a nice new repro one from Germany, only problem is it doesnt fit.
Now I'm certain that the key is correct as its the same as as an origional one that I had a while ago....

So my ign must be wrong/later?

It is the same as the other KS600 (hopeless) that is in the SBG (his key fits both our bikes), both bikes passed through the same restorers hands in the past so must have been fitted with common parts then...

Does anyone recognise what type this is? Then I can track down a key that fits, in the meantime the flat bladed scewdriver will have to suffice!

Well your right, maybe "key" is misleading! its a bakelight switch, with a metal shaft, it turns to turn the ign on, lights etc, but it is designed to be removed from bike when not in use, hence me calling it a key.

the one i have has a thiner shaft and would never engage with the bar in the slot. the one that fits my bike and the other SBG KS600 has a thicker shaft and pronged end to fit as you see...

Here we go, this what I have (thanks to Mr Aichner, and thanks due to him for this picture) It matches perfectly the origional one I have (but cant find at the moment) and of course its identicle to the one illustrated in the parts book I have.

But as can be seen it is never going to turn my ign on!

There we are, repro KS600 key at top, origional Hella bakelite BMW R12 key at bottom.
Ive tried the R12 key in (In KK presence I maight ad!) KitKats bike's ign and it works fine.

Oh and that BMW key was in the pocket of a krad mantel that i got of RAU, i rang him to ask if the coat had been used for any filming cos i had someones krad key!

The ignition you have is not an original one, that's why the copy of the original key doesn't fit. You have the same ignition as me, you need to speak to Harvey about what it actually is and how to get the right key for it..... (or make one to fit)

Ah so all the bikes that have passed through Harvey's hands ended up with the same ign!

Thanks Dave, much apreciated!

Well a call to Harvey Hoare will be worth it just for the ensuing story!

Deitz.

The lock looks to be for an MZ - see this e-bay auction for a spare key.

http://cgi.ebay.co.uk/MZ-TS-IGNITION-KE ... 7C294%3A50

Otherwise you could probably make one out of a bolt and some wood and black paint - little wittlin in the porch. :)

If you do happen to contact Harvey and plan to visit - let me know and I'll tag along.

james your ebay surfing is beyond reproach!

I'm happy now I know what it is, but i dont really fancy paying 12 quid for an MZ key so....

What about this, get a piece of rod the right diameter , cut the end so it is forked and will engage with the slots of the lock then (on a turret drill) drill the centre so my repro key can be pushed fitted in?

Now for the ears to stop it from falling out, two blobs of solder? or any better idea's?

Hmm dont think the solder would work, those ears were pressed in.

Got it, rubber gromit in the key hole so it would hold the key in place just by friction!

God your hard to please sometimes Paul :D

Here's one for EURO 1.90, and he even takes paypal - http://cgi.ebay.co.uk/Zuendschluessel-s ... 7C294%3A50

Otherwise, yes you could make one, but then again you could have done that all along. :x

For the ears, why not cross drill and fit a small roll pin then trim to length.

For the Bakerlight part, why not cast a new one round your home made key using your repro as a pattern - rubber molding solution for the mold and epoxy resin for the new keyhead... or just keep using the screwdriver. :)
