Hello "SSparatrooper", hello forum, ssparatrooper wrote:here is the link to my " you stop shitting in my boots and i will stop pissing in your coffie" friend, the only man i know shot from a DKW in Normandie and personal krad melder to Gustav Knittel

he is a legend!
Regarding John/Gerd as a personal Kradmelder to Knittel, from what I learned from John through email he was a Kradmelder in the staff of the Aufklärungsabteilung but not the personal Melder of Knittel. The late Martin Leidreiter (Knittel's adjutant) told me that August Hollenbacher was Kradmelder to Knittel from spring 1943 to mid 1944. However, it is offcourse perfectly possible that John was temporarily assigned to Knittel at the time he "crash landed" his motorbike in Normandy.
The Allies could detect radio signals. Several JaBo attacks on Knittel's CP had been the result so he tried to avoid the use of radio. His radio operator for communication with the divisional CP had strict orders only to send messages while on the move to make radio detection difficult and he was not allowed to send any messages while Knittel was present. Communication with the company commanders ran through dispatch riders so quite a lot of them were needed.

Yup, I know he was very impressed because once under enemy fire Knittel remained on his feet telling the others to keep low. Please tell John Timo says hi. He'll recall I'm the battalion researcher from The Netherlands who send him a chapter about the Abteilung in Normandy through Andy. If he wants I'd be glad to send him the latest update.ssparatrooper wrote:I will be with john in 2 weeks i will ask him, he has told me he held GK in very high regard and was with him as his melder, john also gave me a photo of a AA treff, you might know some of the blokes in the photo?
I've got those pics too. Two other veterans and John, right?
