Hi,

Good photos West-Front / Heeresbergführer...

Heeresbergführer - Interesting picture. Baby faced lad, plus interesting insignia - i.e. metal cap eagle covering the eagle on the trap badge on his M43 cap, plus breast eagle embroidered in white on a dark green wool backing (rather than more usual woven eagle) on his tunic - as far as I can tell I think I am right in saying that on the rare occasions where dark green wool backed embroidered breast eagles are on tunics they seem to be private purchase additions to NCO's tunics (replacing the standard woven breast eagles), I don't recall seeing them on EM's tunics? Whilst there are late war embroidered breast eagles for EM/NCO tunics, they are usually on a field grey cotton, rather than dark green wool backing. With the age of the lad and the slight strange (but obviously, not unheard of) insignia, I just wondered if you knew if there was a particular story with this photo?? Perhaps he was just lent the tunic and cap by the studio the photo was taken in???!!

Simply a case of variations in use- the proof is in the pictures- portraits often illustrate and highlight the usual postwar mistaken beliefs and myths on German insignia. There are no tight rules on the use of various insignia.

Here are some of my Gebirgsjäger portraits from my collection;

Servus Obergefreiter Hansch und Bergkameraden,

Some excellent protraits you have there Hansch! I really like seeing all the different civilian plaid shirts being worn under the tunics.

Dreifach Horrido!

Very nice Franz, the Heer chap is nicely "salty"... and the Nord is no spring chicken!

I have noticed a slightly higher age demographic in many Gebirgstruppen, perhaps due to the experience involved.

My dear Obergefreiter that is very true SS Nord was formed from an Allgemine unit so he could be one of those chaps still in the unit .
I have looked trow my photos and yes there is a higher age demographic in many Gebirgstruppen in the early war photos
