Pricewise, most of the currently available reproductions fall into a pretty narrow price range. Sole exception being the Janke-made caps.

I'd be curious to see similar-angle photos of these caps so we can compare the various features of each. The only two I own are the LB cap and the Janke LW Bergmütze.

£60.00/US$97 Janke Bergmütze via Extraklasse (T-badge not included)

£45.00/US$73 SOF Bergmütze

£40.00/US$65 GD43.com Bergmütze

£40.00/US$65 Lost Battalions Bergmütze

£34.00/US$55 Hessen Antique Bergmütze (T-badge not included)

An early example of original Bergmütze is on the way to Lost Battalions for study. Hopefully a revised design will be available soon.

An LB bergmutze with a Jager badge is tempting. However, they only provide these in resin, not metal. Militaria Net do the metal ones though, so a replacement seems easy enough to get :)

Beaucoup research to do though before I go down that road again.... 8)

This is the second attempt on our side to improve our own copy of the Bergmutze.

I would like some help on the front crown stiffener. How was that installed ? what size and shape ? Was it made out of thick linen cloth ?

I'll post piccies when we get prototype done.

Pls help with front seam stiffener :)

I'm referring to this statement :
the cloth-wrapped, internal stiffener normally seen in original caps.
Any details ? How was that installed ? what size and shape ? Was it made out of thick linen cloth ?

Hi there,
I'm trying to produce my own Bergmütze. Does anyone have detailed information? I've got that one from GD43 and would use it as guideline, would this be ok?
Thanks,
chris

Gents,
Sorry for the belated response. I've been away on business trip since late summer and I've not had a chance to follow-up with LB on the updated design to the Bergmütze.

I don't have my notes available but believe the front stiffener is about 2cm wide and is a cloth-wrapped piece of stiffening material (I have a photo showing what appears to be leather within the cloth and another showing what appears to be burlap). Patrick is probably able to answer this more accurately. This stiffener is attached at the upper and lower cap seams.

I'll upload some pics later this evening.

The biggest departure from an M-43 remains the double-seam crown attachment. It's unique to the early Bergmützen.

Grüß Di' Bergkameraden,

According to Angolia's book "Uniforms & Traditions of the German Army 1933-1945," The stiffener was 2.5cm wide made of field gray twill with horsehair filling.

Horrido!

Here are some shots of cap stiffeners. As I'm sure with everything else, there were very likely variations in materials used. Note on the stiffeners shown below that the top one appears as leather while the bottom one shows a burlap-type material (which I've also seen used as stiffener on old-style officer field caps). In any event, the stiffeners appears reasonably standardized with regards to size and placement.
