In terms of vehicles I thought hte germans had 3 sorts of recon, apologies for getting it wrong in advance as this is from my dodgy memory.

1 covert recon
2 overt recon, non combatant
3 overt recon combatant

in the last one hte recon made contact with the enemy and pushed a sustained attack for a period of time to determine the strength of the enemy and if posible exploit a local advantage to break through and allow the main force a door way into the rear area of the enemy. For this I think htey used armour such as panzer 4 and 5s, I may be wrong

the polish campaign was initially halted by hitler as he feared defeat, except he granted permission to mount a 'reconassaince in force' which was basically a full scale assualt but they didn't tell him that

gelaende aufklaerung = terrain recce: recce the area to find routes out for armor, forming up points for deliberate attacks, bridges or fording points for vehicles, possible enemy forming up points (these can then be marked for fire)

tactische aufklaerung=tactical recce: done by aircraft and somtimes combined with terrain recce to observe enemy movements or position

gefecht aufklaerung=battle recce (is nice) basicly recce by fire, a forward unit in front of a kampfgruppe that works as the "recce screen" and hits the enemy positions and pushes through, warns the KG either by radios, flares or kradmelders
vehicles can be krads, kubels, swimmers, spw or even panzers, i have spoken to gert krassner a lot ref this a he says this is the way he done it, he used to recce routes on krads if possible to orientate himself to the ground.
we (sbg) do it as part of our kampgruppe so we have a "recce screen" and it works, and it will get even better, sorry if i an telling you to suck eggs just my view!

all of the above can and is done by infantry plus close target recces for deliberate attacks, with detailed sketches of enemy position so the commanders can brief the blokes with made up maps, (no really we used to all have map making kits) it all works and can all be put into shows or private battles if ego`s let it happen! end of egg sucking action

We do the Aufklärungs Abteilung of SS division Nordland. The reason is that this is the unit our contrymen served in. Just like the real unit, or reenactment group draws members from Sweden (mainly), Denmark, Germany and now also Norway.

We currently have a sdkfz222 and a soon to be complete sdkfz 251/1ausf.D plus two motorcycles (R71) and a single 8cm mortar.
The irony is that the unit we recreate was mainly a medium heavy mortar (8cm) support company, but because of the terrain we have at our disposal, our events is mainly doing infantry recon patrols.

And for some reason, we also have a FG trupp attached. So we got both the attractive words :D

Speaking as a member of the SBG's Aufklarungs section, with us it came about as a natural progression.

So many of our members had motorbike combis in any case, but we also acquired three armoured cars in quick succession. Therefore, about three years ago we decided to organise the vehicle owners into a proper Aufkl unit, as opposed to a load of individuals whizzing mindlessly about the battlefield.

Some of our senior NCO's then researched the role properly, including the correct signals and orders given by the unit commanders, and battlefield deployments of the troops and vehicles.
