Re: Luftwaffe Field Division
These photo shows only a soldier in Luftwaffe uniform in Breslau, but he can not be a member of a Fielddivision. In 1945 only three divisions exsited, in Norway, Kurland and Balkan. He could be a member of the Fallschirmjäger in Breslau or other Luftwaffe unit.

Christian,
Good point but also remember that the remnants of destroyed Luftwaffe Feld Divisions were absorbed into other infantry divisions, volksgrenadier divisions and so on. They no doubt kept their existing Luftwaffe uniforms and equipment when they were transfered.

Re: Luftwaffe Field Division
That is true.
But Breslau is special. In early Feburary 1945 the II./Fallschrimjäger-Regiment 25 and III./Fallschrimjäger-Regiment 26 landed in Breslau. These are part of the 9.Fallschirmjäger division, it was no elite unit. It got only secound class equipment and young bad trained soldiers. So it is very possible that this photo shows a Fallschirmjäger of these both batailons.
Also possible units are Luftwaffen-Regiment Wehl or Luftkriegsschule 5 Breslau.

Christian,
You are obviously are more informed than I about Breslau & the troops involved there in 1945. Excellent information. After studying the photo closer, the "Son" looks like a typical Feld Division jager ( or as you pointed out a late war FJ). It is certainly true that many FJ were issued FD camo jackets and regular stahlhelm later in the war. So that is a definate possiblility. Further inspection of the "Vater" reveals a Heer belt buckle and he looks like he is wearing an Heer tunic with a camo pullover smock. I like the fact that both are holding MP44's! One can only hope they were able to survive the war.

Coming back to the FD side of things after a break from the dark side.
Anyone come across any pictures of aircrew transfers to the FD's? Did they still keep their yellow piping?

Re: Luftwaffe Field Division
Not seen aircrew transfers per say but I believe some FJ transfers kept their yellow collar tabs until transferred out of the unit. Danny you fancy doing early Field Division? As I've almost got all the kit together to do early stuff instead of the later Heer controlled years.LuftwaffeFD wrote:Coming back to the FD side of things after a break from the dark side.

Double post
Re: Luftwaffe Field Division
Is there any supporting evidence of a feldblau M43 wool tunic being made / issued? I realize some "Luft M43's" & even "M44's " repros are presently offered for sale. I would think that FD troops would be issued Heer feldgrau tunics when Luftwaffe stocks were exhausted. Heer took over in late 43. One of the guys in my unit posted this quesiton and was interested in putting together a late 44 FD kit.
I've owned an original feldgrau M43 with a bluegrey cotton liner maker marked- Antwerp. It had Luft breast eagle, Obergefreiter stripes and flak shoulderboards. Gulls were pinned directly through the collar with no tabs.
Thanks,
Jim

Re: Luftwaffe Field Division
Hi Jim
I've never seen the Feldbrau M43s tunics being worn by Field Division troops. The only picture, which is still in doubt, is possible Feldbrau M43s being worn by Hermann Goring Division troops. Apart from this photo I've not seen any more possible blue M43s in use apart from some members of Gorings Staff.
As for Feldbrau M44s, I've never seen them and doubt their existance. Most FD troops were issued with Fliegerblouses, when they got transferred to the Heer in 1943, some troops retained these and I assume stock piles already allocated to these units of Luftwaffe uniforms continued to be issued then once depleted they were issued M43 Feldgrau uniforms like the rest of the Army.

Re: Luftwaffe Field Division
Martin,
I have to agree. With the Heer in charge, all replenishment of uniforms and equipment after Luftwaffe stock was exhausted would have been normal Heer supply.
Thanks,
Jim
